Seeing how the popular trend is the Apple2 Fish Tank, thanks for posting that.

+1 to that lol, I can just see it on the news now "man protects fallout shelter with lead found in CRT monitors".

This is what I'm talking about. If they haven't gone to LCD and are looking for tubes, I'd be interested in getting their info. It might be a niche market but it might end up as a niche market that pays.

I read it and it reminded me of the BIG leaded paint and gasoline horror stories of the past as the "powers that be" had to figure out a way of getting the lead out of the paint and air as it was interfering with the spying from the sky technology.

I say it's mostly propaganda bull poop, BUT then I'm not the one making the rules and laws that get a body fined and tossed in a cage or worse.

Much like the leaded battery crappola of the past. When you had to pay to get rid of a vehicle battery as it was cheaper for manufacturers to buy new virgin lead out of Argentina then to recycle used vehicle batteries.

I made a killing back then after the scrap price went back up on lead acid batteries. I was getting people to pay me to haul them away and I had many piles of them on pallets that had been drained of fluids and I traded the used fluids from inside the batteries to a guy that used it for tanning cheap rabbit hides and such. Years later when the prices came up I sold them wholesale to a guy that picked them up. I did the math and overall it was best for me to let someone else do the hard work for a bit of the profit.

I read over the article and I could understand the hazards CRT's can put forth, BUT I could also understand that it seemed that the main problem was regulation of things being done properly as far as possible hazards and costs.

Grinding it up in a liquid bath seemed a great way to end up with a material that would be great for binding together with epoxy and using for "safety shielding" to keep the eyes in the sky from snooping.

From what I read I wouldn't recommend anyone messing with JUNK CRT's UNLESS they had a safe and secure place to store the glass tubes for YEARS. That is if they don't make up or already have laws and such saying that you have to have permission to fart in your own bathtub or shower. Farting on the toilet will always be o.k. as even the law makers couldn't get that one past the alert people.

So I agree that MOST folks should stay away from CRT's as they are becoming so regulated that it will be easier to own a machime gun or crate of grenades then have a CRT for playing your vintage games on.

I read a lot of interesting stuff and sort out the propaganda and fluff from what makes the money flow for the very few at the top of the human food chain.

They could always make nifty safety hats for those that require them so that the spies in the sky & men from space can't see inside their heads,lol...

Thanks Hobo, that what very informative/interesting. Especially how Germans seem to be able to add 5-10 letters to everything! I'm glad I don't work at that place.

I don't have sound on my computer, so I don't know if any of that was in english, but I couldn't figure out why they smashed the cone part of the tube or what the laser guided thing was doing to cut the glass. Diamond wheel?

Another avenue for getting rid of the CRT's and 20-30 dollar towers is to advertise these as MAME build compoinets. To date I have sold 8-10 sets for some folks projects. Just a thought and my .02

Okay, I figured out that MAME means Multi Arcade Machine Emulator, but I don't know what you mean by "20-30 dollar towers" Could you please elaborate?

Older DOS-based games don't need much power. They will run on a Pentium I Packard Bell... with speed!

I think he's basically referring to any working computer tower that is too obsolete for daily use, and would likely be scrapped.

I find the odd '100Hrtz' CRT tv.
Its basicly got a twice as fast screen refresh rate, rather than updating the sceen at 50 times a second, its 100 times a second. In NZ we have a 50hz AC power setup.

Are these CRTs worth money to gamers who want flicker free screens?

OK first off thanks for filling in the gaps I left in my previous post and secondly your right on. The older obsolete units are perfect for these MAME builds. Sorry for being a little to vague. Another way im looking at getting rid of some CRT monitors is I am about to try my hand at building 2-3 MAME cabinets myself. CRT=junk less a few goodies--Working obsolete tower =ing only scrap value and about 200-250 in parts. I'm shooting to sell mine for 1600 or so. This should look appealing as others are selling for 2000. Once I get on the way I will make sure to have pics and post them.

    Not a problem!

For an older machine, all that really matters is size. You have to remember that we only need power to run this:

These games will run on a 486 with 8MB of RAM, without a hitch.

So, basically any working PC on the scrap pile is overkill for these requirements.

Let us know how it goes! It's interesting....

I can honestly say I've never come across them. They may be worth something. I'm also guessing the rate is controlled in the board at the end of the tube if so, the MAME community would eat those alive. Seems to be a heavy shortage of tubes and electronics.

    Wb to the forum btw.

CRT's and other electronics can still go in the trash here. I just don't like doing that...

Definitely. I know that I can legally pitch CRTs in the dumpster.

But, it doesn't feel right. It's counter-productive to what I'm trying to do.

I hope one day a safe and economical way is developed.

Someone did though if you read through my posts. Paid for shipping and it left the other day. I'll admit it's the only one I've sold however I'm fortunate to have time. If the tube didn't sell, I'd fully agree with you.

Seems I've sparked other members to do things with CRTs and their tubes.
