Its probably copper, scratch over it and expose the metal and if its orange its copper. They probably wouldn't use gold in a older tv

I'll take a look in a sec, I know that it's not pure gold, but possibly gold plating over the base metal. or just a varnish?

Define older. Do tv's with DPL chips count as older? If so...there is gold there! Seems from this link..DLP chips were developed back in 88'. That's old enough for me. Board had gold on it, an the chip to.

There is a thread on here somewhere by me with pics to. Here's the link explaining more about DLPs. How DLP Works

An here's a pic of the chip. An no, that's not mine, just a stock image from Google. The board it attaches to is also plated with gold here an there. I need to track down that thread. lol.

Anyhow..point of all this is..Yes there is gold in some tv's. Not a huge honking bar of it, but it can be found. I believe out resident Kiwi also found gold in older tv's. Maybe he'll chime in.

Hope it helps ya OP. Go find ya some projection screens, that's where you'll find these chips an boards.

Just the color of the varnish they used to cover it. Still have an alum heatsink and a couple of transistors to pull tho.

It is a low grade TV board. Yank off aluminum heat sinks & sell the boads to someone for 10 to 22 cents per pound.

ok thanks guys. just wanted to be sure as I'm still kinda new to this. I'm taking off all the heatsinks, ics, tantalum capacitors(haven't found any on these tv boards yet), and transformers. mechanic, is there any value to the transistors?

Some people pull the taller ones (the ones right beside the blue disc caps.) cause the legs and back are copper. Tap them with a hammer or give them a twist with pliers and the black front will pop off. They are so small that whether to pull or not will be up to you. You might have more important stuff needs done and pulling these might take away from it.

lol - found myself working the board over too. Don't forget the ICs if you are so inclined.

It could well be gold, BUT the coating is so thin (the coating process is called sputtering), it would take hundreds of boards to make up a gram

I did find Gold in some old black & white CRTs, inside the channel changer, as contacts and on a couple of TVs channel boards inside the channel changer.
Also as Gold plated legs on Transistors in them.

Some TVs, CRTs and rear projection TVs have Gold plating on the smaller 'plug in boards'. I guess there's different boards plugged in depending on the region of the world the TV was intended for.

I have saved up those Copper backed Power Transistors for a few years, I tried to weigh the bucket yesterday, its over 70lbs now.....
Getting them gets the Aluminium heatsinks too, 30 odd weigh a Lb. (I found 66 weigh a Kg) Extrusions worth more.

On that board I also see a relay, I save them too, there's Copper/Steel/Silver in them.

I was expecting to find a Tantalum 'paint drop' capacitor on there. Most older CRTs had one, I look for them anyway because I expect by the time I find there isn't one if there isn't, I've found everything else...

I pop off the Copper wire Ferrites, smaller ones for my Copper/Iron bucket, unwind the bigger ones for Copper wires and to fill empty food cans with Steel weight.
Plastic coated wire + any chips + the Flyback transformer + Quartz resonators (black plastic for escrap jewellery ? & cans for ? )

I cannot sell 'Low grade boards' here, so if I don't pick it off, I have to rubbish bin it anyway.

Sounds like we're doing the same things!
I de-populate the boards of most everything and my local metal recycler will give me scrap steel price for them.
Yes, I also noticed the same in the relays.
Also, in those relays I found a metal winding that I thought was Cu, but it's heavier (density) than Cu, but lighter than Au!?
