    1962 Zenith TV

Very neat find today from a client. I pick up TV's, computers and such from this business and this week I was given an old Zenith. Now, if I had realized how old and interesting it was, I would have taken pictures of the process. Ahh well. The last part that I took apart showed a date of 6-2-62. The front "bezel" was aluminum, the carry handle was brass and it had a dozen or so vacuum tubes in it. Very cool but sadly I couldn't find a ton of info on it. Perhaps this one was better left intact for restoration but a little too late for that. Just wanted to share a neat find.

It would've had gold in both the VHF and UHF tuners...

Are we talking tubes type tv's or after...Quantify a lot and do share where one might find this gold.

What I meant was, that is how those rumors get started on the 'net. How computers have tons of gold in them.
I still have a truckload of old tube type TV's out back, and after tearing a few down, there is not enough there to make it worth my time.
Except for the rare transistor, their not worth the gas to haul them home.

I never heard about there being 'lots of gold' in the older TVs, but I know from working at Zenith years ago, that there was gold in the old 'click click click' style of tuners. It was used on the contacts inside the tuner, and a 1962 Zenith would've used this type. They phased this style out in the late 1970's in favor of the better (aka cheaper) electronic units.

    Yes, plenty of vintage dust.

I haven't broken down the channel box yet to answer this gold related question. But, won't some of you guys fell silly if a gold brick fell out of it! I'll let you guys know how retirement is. But seriously, what kind of transistor should I be looking for. That is an area that I have nearly no knowledge of. Thanks all!

There is no rhyme or reason to what or where they install these parts. Might also check out old stereo's,

Every now and then stuff like that does happen. I have taken apart a few things in the past and it pains me to do it. But it's all done in the name of scrapping

Don't know the value yet but their worth my time (15 sec.) to pull them off the low grade boards. Like a lot of other things we do, when we get enough then we'll get a buyers attention. Even a hobby refiner needs quantity to make it worth their while.

And sorry for the bad camera pic.

I've stumbled on a few of those. Had one that i sat on forever and ended up scrapping it. As luck works, the next week a fellow showed up, interested in old TV's like that. Got in good with another company that dealt with old electronics (small town TV repair shop, closed down, made me sad man, in my home town and all). He gave me pertnere all his old equipment. Made quite a nice profit from resale. He gave me 14 of those old Zeniths. Still in it's nice stand. Sold each one for $200 to a restorer guy.

It's worth it to sit on them dinosaurs. You'll kick yourself if you don't. Good find, thanks for the post.
