So i was on ebay looking at different kinds of magnets and my wife ask me me what im up to so i tell her im looking for a magnet because i lost my other on about a week ago. She than tells me she pulled one out of the wash a few days ago and it was on the dryer. She said that it looked like it had stuff growing on it. I was puzzled so i went to the dryer and got it and what she thought was mold or something of the sort was just some metal flakes. haha. so all of this for nuttin. I got my perfect magnet back. Oh and she also informed me that she has another one in the closet. dang from rags to riches.
I got a few magnets from motors. Bought a box of hard drive magnets off ebay, and also have a few misc magnets from who knows what.

I use a big 6 1/2" one like this for cleaning up the floor, just added a wooden broom handle to it so no stooping over.
This is the one I carry in my pocket on my keys.

I like the hard drive magnets also, very powerful it finds the ferrous in most things....like crappy stainless.

I use hard drive magnets since I have a ton of them. One good thing about working in IT. I'm never short on HDs to break open.

I've got an N52 neodymium magnet which has a hole through the centre so it can be suspended on a piece of string. I use it occaisionally to see if a piece of metal is weakly magnetic or not. If it is, it will stick to this magnet. The magnet is small, but powerful. Here are a couple of demo pics I fired off to give you an idea...
It's difficult to show that the hammer and the circular saw are suspended rather than laying on something, but believe me they are!

I took a 5/16' dia. 3lb magnet and stuffed it into the end of a 5" long piece of 3/8" soft copper tube. I'm experimenting with baling the stripped wire to conserve storage space.

we have gotten a few slime air guages with magnets on the clips for our pockets, and we got some bigger ones took out of some ADT security parts that are always stuck to the side of the truck bed

Oh I like that idea! I have some rare earth magnets that will fit perfectly in a tube like that.
If it wasn't for the $ in $crap, it would just be.....

I carry a little keychain magnet with me at all times and back at home in the shop I have a small rectangular hard drive magnet. It is insanely strong.
I also just wired up the electromagnetic coil out of an electric wheelchair brake. It runs on 24vdc and i have lifted over 30lbs with it no problem.

Get the magnetic sweeper at Harbor Freight. I like in the ad by BallyMoss. Down the bottom it says that it can be used for magnet fishing.

Speakers and cabinet door magnets mostly. I saw a bass speaker busted on the side of the road and picked it up for the magnet. It's over 5 inches diameter, and with the bracket it was screwed to the speaker with, attached it to a piece of wooden closet pole. Works great sweeping around for nails and screws, or finding something i lost in the grass

I got a nice one out of a dishwasher. 1/4 inch by 3/4 inch just as strong as HD magnet. It is plated so it doesn't chip and it hasn't broken when I drop it. Can't live without one. Great when the supposed chrome plated table leg turns into a chromeplated brass sink leg.The magical magnet.

yep! I have them in the bed of my truck, inside my truck and all over the tool boxes in both mine and my parents garage. I took an old plastic scrub broom and shaved all the bristles off and zip tied a bunch to the frame and use that to sweep the driveway after I'm done. looks funny but it works!
