    Home Built Car Trailer

First I'll give some ideas on where to get free trailer parts, yes free.

Contact some of the local RV storage lots and campgrounds near you, ask the manager if he has any abandoned RV's that he would like to dispose off.

These old trailers are so full of dry rot the owners find it cheaper to rent storage for a couple of months then abandon their property leaving disposal to others.

Plenty of people favor a campground and return year after year they leave the trailer there during their absence. Somewhere along the line another newer or larger unit shows up with the old trailer getting parked out of sight.

This trailer is made from just an acquisition, I gutted the trailer saving the frame and axles, RV trailer axels are to narrow for a car trailer so I cut the spindles off then re tubed them to suit my needs.

The 4 inch channel was a bit light, you will note the picture with the black truck the frame is bowing at the ends, To remedy this problem I welded bridging onto the top rails of the frame.

That old WD9 tractor tips the scales at 8,000 lbs, notice no bow in the frame this time.

The winch needed some help to load the tractor, a block was required.

Great job on your trailer, that will last for a good long time with proper care.

Another bit of advice, if you live in a state like mine where a title is required, you may want to find a trailer with a title. Here in Pennsylvania it is a PITA to get a homemade trailer title so its just easier get vehicle that already has a title.

Some states its very easy to license and run trailers like this, others are not so know where you live and your laws.

I live in central Canada, registering the homebuilt was easy, its licensed for a GVW 7.000 lbs - no safety required.

Also: if you have just a regular auto driver license or even a CDL class B you can tow only a 10,000 lbs GVW trailer. Everything above 10,000 requires a class A restricted or a class A.

Don't tell anyone, I'm class 1 with air endorsement and national safety code number , some farmer will want me to drive a grain truck. But I'm sure this information will be useful to other forum members who are not aware of the weight restrictions.

You mean when I load up my gooseneck flatbed trailer with 300 bails of hay im not legal to drive it? It weighs in at about 17000 lbs. Ive never been stopped or anything and ive driven right by weigh stations with it too.

My computer has screwed me out of posting this twice now, so 3rd times a charm, short sweet & to the point.

I am a Colorado class A driver. As long as your vehicle does not have air brakes, your trailer does not have 3 or more axles, and your gvw is under 26,000, you do not need a cdl in CO. Additionally, if any truck, up to and including tractor/trailer is farm plated, you do not need a cdl to drive it within CO and within 100 miles of it's registered address.

The rest of the infoI tried posting was useful, but less relevant.

Yeah thats what I thaught too C4f5 combined weight has to be 26000 pounds before you need a cdl. I use to have a class c when I worked for an oxygen company. Im sure thats why they never bothered me because it was for farm use and im sure they knew it.
