Since I primarily deal in E-Waste now and the pickup's gone(guy wanted the trans out of it and I needed to pay for a ticket), decided to clean up my act a bit and accepted ownership of my wife's grandma's 2010 HHR. Biggest i've been able to haul was 3 console TVs and a bunch of laptops.

I have two vehicles for scrap accumulation/hauling.
    1989 Ford Escort station wagon and a 1991 Toyota 2wd pickup with the 3.0 V6/ 5 speed
The Toyota is a good little hauler. Decent on gas and still chugging away with 318,000 miles on it.
Eventually, I want to get a hitch on it and pick up a small trailer.

1998 Dodge Ram 1500 long bed. Put an airlift in the back to raise the load capacity up to 5000lbs and a liftgate on it I found for about 1/3 price on craigslist.

I would think twice before putting 5000lbs on a 1/2 ton pickup! Air bags don’t increase GVWR, they just keep you level. I wouldn’t even attempt 5000lbs on my 1 ton pickup with airbags. (Which is for sale if anyone is interested.)

It's hard to think of a likely situation where I would. Had a bit over 3000 in there once and that was the heaviest by a big margin. The manufacturer said at 50psi I could hold 5000. Will check with them about it again. Thanks!

JJinLV, a chain is only as strong as the weakest link. Forget what the manufacturer of the airbags says. Look on the door jam of your pickup or in the owners manual (which is probably available online). Your pickup is limited to about 1700 lbs I’m guessing. Stay safe and legal out there. I don’t know about LV laws, but around here 3000lbs in a 1/2 ton pickup would be a $1500 fine if you got caught. ($1/lb overweight)

Still running an old 94 f-150 long bed. The running gear is good.Brake and steering systems have been rebuilt. The frame is a little dicey. Replaced some of the cross members and welded up any fine stress cracks that i could find before they got to be a problem.

I guess it's a half ton pickup truck when it's new. Maybe a 1,250 lb load limit ?

I figure around 600 lbs -or- half of what it was when it was new is the limit for my old machine.

I have 9 leaf progressives with overloads and air bags on the cummins, but it has a boxed frame and dana 80 srw axle in the back. I've put two pallets of laptops on it before...so far the heaviest ive managed across the scale truck alone is 11,900. Then there is the skid steer trailer, with newly minted 5 foot sides on it, most combined weight around 19,000. I have used a gooseneck to haul copper chops, 25,000lbs and change. Truck doesn't care, the brakes are superb (3rd gen fronts, disc rears, engine brake and proportional controller). It's all in the equipment, that and WI only cares what plate you paid for lol.

I have a 07 Tacoma with a 4x10 trailer with a drop down gate for wheeling up appliances and such with my dolly. As I am getting more into scrapping I am seriously considering selling my daily driver(4runner) and getting a full size pickup. Used to have a 01 chevy 2500 until a cow decided to run out if front of me and total it!

Your knowledge I"m assuming was gained through education and not the road of hard knocks.

A 5000 pound payload on a half ton in addition to a hefty fine would also lead to criminal charges being, vehicle impoundment, loss of drivers licence for driving over its designated weight class.

Overweight above 30% would become a criminal offence.

You can have your GVWR changed at the department of motor vehicles. That comes with a higher registration fee of course. Back when I had a 3/4ton F-250 I had it registered with a 26,000 lb GVWR. I could have had a GVWR of 56,000 but I was too young to get a CDL.

Are you able to remember that far back so that you could tell us the procedure you had to go through to have the GVW of your F250 changed. I've done it a few times with the F350's and larger trucks to avoid the expensive plate fee.

Anytime I was hauling more than my registered GVW would grab a one way permit to cover the weight, keep in mind though I still could not exceed the manufacturers recommendations for said truck.

You can get overwidth permits but then your required to travel certain times of the day with pilot cars.

So as not to keep everyone in suspense waiting on a reply from you, the GVW maybe registered below that of the manufactures listing, the department of motor vehicles requires that you bring in a weigh ticket from having the truck weighed on a scale - empty.

I would suggest pressure washing all the grease and mud from the truck to get an accurate weight - no sense in paying a license fee for grease/ crude, rust scale and mud when it could be actual payload. Emergency equipment, flags and flares, fire extinguisher, chalks and chains etc that you use daily should be tared in with the truck.

I not only have a CDL with air endorsement but have also my National Safety Code number. When we had the yard in Hope we purchased the DOT vehicle inspection manual from the Queens Printer. When the truck went in for its yearly safety all out repairs beforehand had been done by the book.

By having the book won two argument with the inspector who had to call his boss the verify, anyhow the electric horn did not work but the twin air horns did he wanted to disqualify the truck until the electric was repaid. I won the argument.

Air brake equipped trucks require both an audible and visual indicator for low air pressure. The audible is an annoying buzzer that will not silence until the proper air pressure has been met, the visual consists of gauges and a red light. The red light did not work on my truck but had a wig wag installed.

With low air pressure your not going to miss the wig wag as it swings back an forth in front of your line of vision. What it boiled do to is he wanted all the factory installed equipment to work, but his boss said the wig wag would pass. Truck passed its yearly inspection with flying colors.

The DOT vehicle inspection book paid in spades, knowledge is power.

Logging trucks mostly have the wig wag, when your traveling down a steep mountain grade your undivided attention is on the road.

Correct. I had to have my truck and trailer weighed and inspected. Then I just headed down to the DMV and told them I wanted to raise my GVWR. It almost quadrupled my registration cost. I also had to get my health card but i forget if that was for the DMV or maybe it was my insurance that required it. This was all in AZ so i am not sure what the different requirements are in other states.

2005 Dodge Ram w/a Hemi. Not the greatest truck for scrapping but it get the job done and it's paid for. I also have a small 5x8 trailer and access to others if I need them. Probably gonna be trading my truck in soon and either taking on a 90's model chevy 1500 4x4 or looking for a smaller ranger or something of the sort hoping to get the Chevy for the pulling power.

You know its amazing that I have not hit this tread yet. I have a '99 suburban K1500 LT and a custom 4x12 trailer that is a frankenstien kinda thing. Thing looks like crap but it holds at least 2k on the axle and unfortunatly, that will but me over GCVW. But it is sure nice scrappin around on leather seats and I really only go to business clients.
