    Tablet Scrapping

I have a half dozen Dell Latitude 10 tablets with various power issues. Is it a better call to sell them whole for whatever they are worth or are there any valuable parts inside? Moreover, is there a safe way to remove the screen, intact? I've never taken apart a tablet, as they usually come in either totally trashed or reusable. I've never encountered more than one in this condition at once.

    Thanks!

I was wondering if the price to scrap them is close to cell phones?

Run the numbers on ebay to see what you can receive for them. Be sure to check the "Sold" ones and the shipping.

If you are interested in testing them and parting them out you can sometimes do well but it really depends on you and the models you have. 73, Mike

Check with Armygreywolf. I have sent him probably a dozen or more over the years. If they are repairable and worth something, you should get more than scrap value, if not I think scrap value was between 65 cents and 75 cents a pound.

I've never worked on the Dell tablets, but have repaired quite a few of the Amazon Kindles. Usually, any power issues were simply a battery replacement. If you don't have the 'correct' plastic pry tool, you can open them up with an old guitar pick...

I have spoken with my R2 regarding these in the past here is my knowledge of information gleaned:
Boards inside are midgrade to high grade boards (I've seen some nice ones and some really cheap-o ones) but they are small and are about the weight equivalent of a laptop hard drive board (although they won't give you THAT price for them.)

The screens: I'd pay money to see someone get one off without cracking it. I've tried I don't know how many ways- and have never accomplished that feat.

The batteries contained within are stuck into the unit with some type of gorilla/NASA space aged sticky substance that will render it worthless if it isn't swollen.

If you can sell them whole and get something out of them: That is what I would do personally. Scrap in them is minimal at best. Probably 90% of it ends up in the trash as it is about 90% glass and plastic.

If anyone has any better tips or ways to maximize these.. I'm all ears.

    Just like a cell phone.

Nice board, but light weight, an the rest is garbage.

Just like Cell phones, tablets, cameras(the low-end ones), etc.

    Good luck.

Here is a video of me ripping one open. It's a pain in the tail for about 0.8 OZ board .

I think you meant to say "$2-$2.50 per pound". I don't know the value for sure but the board is worth a few cents. This is why recycling it with out taking money from taxpayers doesn't work out for things like this.

I encourage you to open them despite what I say. A firm believer in everyone should decide for themselves if something is worth it for them. For me...tablets just aren't worth the hassle of opening. Same with certain cell phones and cameras. One would thing a digital camera would have some goodies..sadly mostly plastic, a tiny board an a lot of wasted time in my opinion. Same with the majority of tablets I've opened. Once again though as I like to say...what may work for me, may not work for you or others.

I wish you luck an I encourage folks to open things an decide for themselves, even if the rest of us tell you it's not worth it. Only you can really decide that. For me, it's easier to just toss in my tablet pile an sell in bulk to a buyer. I'm a one man operation who does this full time. I have no desire to take on employees, so I do what works for me.

    As always...YMMV.

Good luck an report back on your findings!

Digital cameras have a lot of micro screws in them. Smashing them with a hammer doesn't work well

I use cheap tablets and free WiFi from a community group. 6 inch tablets I think.
A few have broken and there's some damaged 'found' ones in my pile.

What I have noticed is that their touch screen, and the actual screens, the ribbon cable ends up in the same place.
So I think its quite possible to mix differrent tablets boards/screens/touch screens together.
The battery would depend on the board shape.
And the casing depends on the board too, switches and such.

But out would bve quite possible to replace the screen. I think the touch screens glued in there, I broke one trying to get it out. I now figure that using a heat gun to warm the glue up might work.
