    Look out for this guy

If anybody sees this funny-looking guy, don't scrap him:

This is the EO Personal Communicator, released in 1991. It's one of the first tablet computers, and it is a collectible. The last few I spotted on ePay went for over $300. You could also sell one to me! ;-)

Here's one for FLimits: Somewhere in my junk, I have a "Bondwell" computer, or maybe it was called a "Bondwell 64". I guess it classifies as one of the first attempts at a laptop computer or a luggable.

    Are they of any interest/value?

    Jon.

Is it the one with the speech synthesizer? I think they were the only luggables that had it. Here's one talking:

If you wanted to sell it, you could get around $100-$200 US. But wouldn't you miss that voice???

I don't think so, but would have to look. I got it from the office I used to work at. It was old, still running but we only used it for spreadsheets and the like. It didn't take long to kick it into a corner and go for something newer. I shudder to think of having to deal with eBay....I'm with Sir Scrap on that topic!!

I remember that "eastern European" voice very well. When our younger son was just learning to talk, he was driving his mom nuts by repeatedly asking about what printed words were saying, pointing to something, and saying, "what does that say?"

We had a kids software program that allowed the to type in a word and have the computer say it, in that same east European accent. We showed them how to use it to make up silly little stories about their stuffed rabbits and the like. Anyway, Chris wanted to know what the words on the car said. Mom said "I'm busy". So he took a pencil and paper, painstakingly copied the letters and took the paper to the computer and typed them in so he could hear what they said. (Toyota) This connection between the letters and using the computer voice to say them was made by a child just old enough to have barely begun walking, long before he was old enough for preschool!! We were floored!

It sure hammered home to us: the usefulness of a computer to the young mind!

Now he's taking electrical engineering and telling me that I should be using my smartphone more and kicking my laptop out of the way!

    Jon.

Wait till he has to do programming or a bunch of spreadsheets. Or a thesis. The keyboard is our friend! Tablets with digitizers are great, though, for taking notes, especially with a lot of equations and symbolic input. When I was looking for one of those online, every thread I read had a couple of engineering students looking for a digitizer tablet.

If you ever want to sell your Bondwell, I could post it for you in a couple of online forums. There's probably someone in your area who would want it, especially if it's one of the real luggables with a speech synthesizer. Their smaller laptops are less interesting.
