Possible oppurtunity to re-sell old telecom equipment...

Recently I was reading a news article about the Russian Government's order of 10s of thousands of electronic typewriters.

There is a good reason for this. The US Spy programs cannot intercept typed papers over the internet.

Most of the new phones systems that are going into buildings are based on VOIP or Voice over IP. Almost all the telecom equipment has been moving in that directly for the last 5 years or so. Anything that is currently routed through the internet like VOIP can be listened into without breaking current federal laws. And even if laws are passed, once the call leaves US Soil, it can be listened to without breaking current federal laws, so if your transmission for example goes through a Satellite, it's no longer on US soil and can be listened to.

Phone calls generated on the old phone system, that stay within the boundaries of the US, cannot be listened into. So what we are currently seeing is a huge demand for older telecom equipment, yet the manufacturers of that type of equipment no longer exist.

If you come across a large quantity of older telecom equipment that uses phone line instead of VOIP, shop around for the right buyer, it could mean a sizable profit.

At the heart of science is an essential balance between two seemingly contradictory attitudes--an openness to new ideas, no matter how bizarre or counterintuitive they may be, and the most ruthless skeptical scrutiny of all ideas, old and new. This is how deep truths are winnowed from deep nonsense. -- Carl Sagan
