well as some of you know im a forklift tech so i travel to warehouses and grocery stores well today i was at a local store seen this big dumpster outside full of metal . went it did my job filled out my paper work then went and seen the manager to tell him what was wrong with the forklift and whatnot. At the end of the convo i asked him about the dumpster as there was old metal tables in there good for a welding bench. we got talking he told me he has to pay for the company to come drop the bin off to have the stuff removed . next time he is going to call me first this bin was 40 feet long 6 feet high 6 feet wide full of metal.

Ask your scrapyard if they will drop off a 40' rolloff for you for free at the grocery store and tell the MGR to fill it up. When full tell MGR to call you for pickup. You then call scrapyard and get paid.

What kind of scrap is a grocery store going through that requires a 40 foot bin? If it was a one time deal I could see that but I am drawing a blank at the moment as to what would be an ongoing situation.

Sounds like a good idea if he can find one like that.
The scrapyards near me charge for the roll-off, but give a discount based on the weight.
Was thinking of getting a commision for setting those up.
When I see metal mixed with cardboard I used to go ahead and pick-up w/out asking.
Once I got told to leave, I thought of setting up (trying to sell them on the discounted roll-off for commision from scrap-yard).

Funny thing one time when I was new to scrapping I picked a truckload the employee told me was OK to take, once truck was full, noticed the label on roll-off same as place I was taking it (only once, didn't do it again)
I think it's funny looking back because they were paying 5 cent/LB.
Hmmm...Still know where a few are I Used to avoid .
(Haven't scrapped for two weeks, feeling like a caged pit-bull about now).

Oh, okay, so once you knew who owned the contents of the roll off you took it anyway.

Must have been a really tiny label. Every yard here makes sure every one knows who owns that bin. Even a blind person couldn't miss it.

I worked in a grocery store for years, and you would be suprised of the metal that goes through them places. Display racks, shelves, roll arounds, etc.. Grocery stores are very wasteful.

I have to agree, grocery stores are a good source for scrap. Give them all cards because floor space is premium. May take awhile to save up enough to fill a 40 yard bin but go in each week or bi weekly. You might net half truck load here and there. It just compliments your daily route. Another great one is mall renovations. Don't ask mall security, ask the contractors. Avoid anything unions are involved in.
