What am I missing on auction prices?

Here's a listing of a completed sale of a government auction.

    https://www.ncstatesurplus.com/ssp/p...action=display

    Here's the same thing which I cut and pasted;

    Item No. Description Amount
36 One lot of 10 Power Mac G5 computers. Dates of manufacture 2005 and 2006. Some, if not all, may be missing parts such as hard drives, RAM, etc. Offered as is. Condition unknown. 12022000080 $2,222.00
    Total Amount $2,222.00

After doing a completed search on ebay the best I can see is they sell for about $100 each. But these in the govt auction are missing parts. What am I missing? I bid $6 each they sold for $222.00 each. Mike.

I can only speak from the low tech side of things...last week at an auction a popcorn machine that I had purchased at a different auction for about $35 went for $400. So on one hand was happy I got a great deal before, but was pissed that this one was being inflated way above value. Hard to say on any given day what people are thinking.

I agree with Kris Kringle. It is frustrating when you go home empty handed, but those folks will move on to other things when they loose money on it. I worry more that people see how much they went for and now think they have a million dollar computer collecting dust in the garage.

What you are missing is resale value... Instead of looking at the whole computer and selling it as one piece, look at parting out and selling. The power supply can go as much as 150.00 or higher. You just need to find that "one" buyer that will buy it.
Some businesses that repair computers and have companies that use said computers can charge an arm and a leg.
The company that uses said computers, just want it to work, price no object. If they buy 1 or 10, it's all the same.

The person or company that bought those G5's has a purpose for those computers, they are not scraping them.

even if it says "for scrap" there still are parts that they need to keep theirs going.

This is a good point, although many do overpay at auctions. I know in Honduras, old Macs sell in computer stores like our Ipads sell here. There are buyers for these parts--All the more reason to sell internationally on Ebay.

Collecting more buyers is one aspect of my e-business that I have neglected. It would be handy to know what various collectors, buyers, & service providers around you are looking for.

the ad said hard drives and parts missing. look at the auctions at florida U for example. one auction will be for towers with parts missing. the next one will be for boxes of ram and cards.

this will be more and more previlent as e scrap gets more and more publisized.

as i mentioned in another post 2 of my early customers are now selling me towers with mother boards only and expecting me to pay the same price.

I had one a hole scrapper sell me five with the metal finger card holders and plug ins actually glued back on the empty case. he did leave the mother boards, but only because he was too lazy to take them out.

I have bought quite a few pallets of these over the years, Unless the 2005 are quad G5, and the 2006's are actually Mac Pros (They look the same at first glance) WAAAAY over paid, even for parts.
