so before anyone gangs up on me i have tried lookin for this question and nothing so far.



I used to part out cars for ppl that didnt read my introduction and i have a starter that i havent sold in over a year. so the question is what type of metal is in a car starter?? it came off a 95 cadillac deville by the way

also what are tire nuts made out of? the 4-8 nuts that attach the tire to the car


FYI: i parterd out cars and sold them for the part. I never learned the metal in the parts i was selling since it wasent necesary and i would lose focus on other things.

ummm, starter is a motor, you can bust the aluminum snout off of it, otherwise toss it in with the motors,
lugnuts go with your regular metal, if you are scrapping cars just toss them in a car.

First thing you need is a magnet aplascec1a. Then do some research on here about how to use it. Better yet google ferrous and non-ferrous metals...it might bring you back here but that's a start!! Welcome to the forum.

Your starter likely has an iron body and cast aluminum nose. If you just haul the whole starter in, they likely have a specific price for starters.

thanks i wasent sure if they just pay for it separate. the recycling center i will be going to is "CMC recycling" and they have locations nationwide

and i already have a magnet thx for the advice

i did my hw i called and the lady said i can use the weights if i have more than 200 pounds of metal and if not i have to go to the warehouse... they pay $10.15 for every 100 pounds if i dont sort out the metal and i put it with all the tin but i think i will sort it

i just opened it with a 8mm socket and wow it looks like i will be better to sell the copper... am i right?

most starters are perminate magnet, with the copper being in the armature it is possible to pull the copper out but may not be worth the time. IMO

There's copper in the solenoid also.

so i sliped it out but i cant remove the copper wire ... can i leavethe copper with the metal cylinder attached?

Most yards should have a price for starters. Some may consider it copper breakage. It depends on the yard. The copper can and will come out. That depends on your determination though. Plenty of threads will tell you how to remove the windings. It also depends on the amount of time you want to spend on it too. Myself, sometimes i just throw them in with my motors and other times i try to see how many vodka and teas i can get through before i finish.
