Belts From Shredded Tires

I have recently purchased a piece of property. I have a mound of the metal from shredded tires on the property. It has some rubber in it (thats how i figured out what it is) and i would say the ratio is roughly 80/20 metal to rubber. The local scrap yard looked at me like I was an alien. Is this stuff worth anything, because I have a D6 in front of it right now and would hate to bury money.... Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks for your time.

I take em in all the time. Just throw em with a load of mixed metals or use as stuffers on appliances or autos. Never had any problem from the yards with it.

there is a market for it, especially for the rubber "crumb" thats produced by shredding tires.... big market for that!!! High rent stuff!!! The stuff you have, as high of ratio of steel as it is, I would do as Skyline said and use as stuffer material. The stuff the yards take around here has more than 20% non steel!! LOL

Whats the story with the steel belts from tires?

I have heard of people burning the tires off so they can get the steel belts out & sell it as metal.
Is the metal a special sort & therefore worth more?
I sometimes find the side walls from tires, they must have cut them from the tires so they can get to the belt easyer.

I remember the 'crumb' being used as a safer base for kids playgrounds.

The belts in the tread and bead are just steel. Burning off the rubber to sell the steel is more profitable than paying to dump the tire, but burning tires is illegal in most areas, and I believe in all of the US.

Correct. Also another possibility, round here if you cut sidewall out you can take tires and sidewalls to landfill that way but side walls have to be cut out so the tire compresses better.

We used to use flattened out tire tread, 3 strips wide, as a floormat in the workshop.
It kept you off the cold concrete floor & could stand up to the abuses of grease & hot metal chips from the lathes & mills & grinders & the gas axe.

Some of the older bias tires & larger truck tires have a stainless steel ring that is molded into the Bead part of the tire, if you find any solid / None wire rings any where from 3/16" to 1/4" You might want to check it with a magnet.

I have a market for this material. It's call tire wire which is ISRI 281 for what you got now., if you clean it better it brings more value and it would fall under ISRI 278.
How much do you have available now?

I only know its sold buy the ton for around 125/ton for the 20% impurity and 175 for 5% impurity tire wire.
