Dropping CRT monitors/tvs off at ECycleWashington location

Has anybody had any problem dropping off gutted crt monitors or tvs at an ECycleWashington.org location? I plan on tearing them apart, removing cord, copper, aluminum and possibly low grade boards (if not, then just tear the transformers and heat sinks off). I can put the tube back in the case and put in a screw or two, then drop them off, but I'm not sure if ECycleWashington will take them or not. Of course, the drop off in my area is at a good will, so they might not care or know what to look for when they get them...

Lol, it's a totally legit posting. And the gutted crts wouldn't be donated to goodwill. Goodwill is just a collection center for this program.

Based on the 'FAQ' at http://www.ecy.wa.gov/programs/swfa/...cycle/faq.html, this program is mandated by law and paid for by the manufacturers.
'A Washington State law passed in 2006 requires electronics manufacturers to pay for this recycling program. The new law is an example of "producer responsibility," where the company that makes a product is responsible for recycling the product at the end of its life. Manufacturers include the costs of recycling their products in the cost of doing business. '

So, it's already paid for by the manufacturers and the program is mandated by a state law. The only way for the program to go away is if the laws are changed. While I wouldn't be making money off of the taxpayers, I would be making money at the expense of the manufacturer. On the other hand, these are obsolete (does anybody still make crt monitors?) products, so the opportunity to use this program for disposing of crt monitors will only last as long as the supply of existing crt monitors lasts.

many CRT monitors are shipped overseas where they are still popular in third world countries. Furthermore, there are some that are converting them to televisions for sale to countries overseas where the flat screen technology has not taken hold yet. I read where some school districts are still using CRT monitors because cash is so tight.

I would check out the end user on this kind of program. If the monitors end up being sent to China for instance then they are being torn down and the lead is smelted out by poor villagers using methods that can only be described as primitive to say the least. These people are getting cancer and all sorts of nasty diseases from the lead smelting process. Exporting to China is a big business when it comes to CRT monitors but not necessarily a good business.

I talked with a guy that works at one of the WA state E-Cycle drop off locations. FWIW, they don't break down the electronics at the scrap yards - they just palletize it and the state picks it up and sends it to the processor and sends them a check. He did say that the state does NOT want gutted crt monitors and tvs. He didn't know if the state could track it back to them or not, but he said that if they suspect something, they'll turn it away - they don't HAVE to accept the waste.

I don't break down crt monitors but have seen tons of broken down stuff at goodwill. If you are near South Seattle drop off at Total Reclaim

There are three large bins 5' high for PCs-monitors and miscellaneous and you should sign in at the loading dock before dropping. The loading dock is open weekdays to 7 and RE PC up the street accepts e-waste also.

Here in Florida CTRs don't last long on the curb. Scrapped out or not. The manufactures of meth use the phosphorous to make crystal meth.
I can sit a scrapped cathode ray tube on the curb without a case and no other scrap value and some skeleton of a person looking 100 years old on a bike will ride off with it within an hours time. I guess they get a discount for it.

The stuff in a CRT is called a 'Phosphor'
The stuff they make meth out of is 'Phosphorus'.

They are two different chemicals & whats in a CRT has no use in making meth at all.

I'm guessing they are getting the iron in the screen out or processing the glass to get the lead out of it, I dunno how they do it though.
The value of steel in a screen is very low & a bare CRT tube is very very dangerous.
