Just started paying attention to prices. Here's what they were during the last couple of loads I did.

Cast Aluminum - .40/lb
Aluminum Breakage - .10/lb
Clean Aluminum - .50/lb
Stainless Steel - .45/lb
Aluminum Cans - .60/lb
Yellow Brass - 1.30/lb
#1 Copper - 2.80/lb
#2 Copper - 2.70/lb
Batteries - .10/lb
Prepared Iron - 250/ton
Unprepared Iron - 215/ton
Bailing Material - 205/ton



And I just called to find out the price of Steel as I haven't been separating it and I guess if it's not 1/4" or thicker it's just bailing. Otherwise it's the same as Iron. They just throw it all together. Guess I won't worry about starting to do the spark test.

What is considered Aluminum "Breakage" and "Baling Material"?. The Baling Material is worth more than Aluminum Breakage.

Wow the copper prices are extremely low. I cashed in some of my #2 last week @ $3.55 a pound.

The yard I go to gives around 70 % to 75 % of what spot prices are. It's nice to see prices are steadily climbing again!

Are there other scrap yards around to compare prices with in your a area ?

@Mick - Breakage is when this highest value metal is the majority of the weight but still has other stuff in it. What I got for aluminum breakage was cast aluminum flywheels and carborators from lawnmowers. Bailing is just anything thin pretty much. Plus it's the same as when you take stuff in whole like washers and dryers. Whatever can be smashed together in a bail I suppose. And you're right, bailing is more than the aluminum breakage. Only by a 1/4 cent per pound but still. Hadn't noticed that before.

@injunjoe - I have checked around and there are 2 other places that are a little bit more of a drive but it's the same company. They pretty much run the area. Gonna have to expand my search and like I said, just build up bigger loads to be worth the drive.

Ok, thanks. Here, "Breakage" would be called "Irony Aluminum" and "Baling" is called "Light Iron". I think as we go along here, people will get used to interchangeable terminology.

my yard calls breakage "dirty" and bailing is called "appliance grade"......maybe someday our organization can "lobby" for some universal terms !!
