    Young kid from central PA

Hello, i am from Sigel, PA. i started out scrapping a few years after i moved to PA. I moved with my family to my grandparents house because they are getting older and are having trouble maintaining the 65 acre property. we have a large 2 story garage a barn and 2 farm houses, all loaded with stuff and after a good few weeks of spring cleaning we had a large pile of metal. My dad told me if i took it all in i could have the money for helping out so much. After taking in all 3 truck bed fulls i was hooked and have continually been taking in a load every month or so. i have been reading posts on this site quite often and have realize that this is a great place to learn new and helpful tips and ideas. Thank you for reading everyone

Welcome to the Forum, Red. Up kind of early. You must have stayed up all night.

ya my barn was packed with good stuff to scrap like old broken farm stuff but the upstairs of our garage type building was amazing not so much for scrap but just stuff. like an old pepsi machine from when you could get one for 10 cents (although it turns out its my uncles it was still pretty cool to find and to find out it still works and lights up) and old natural gas chandeliers that are really cool. and a bunch of other things. also as we were in my grandfathers old workshop we found a full set of cutting torches and full tanks of oxygen and Acetylene. i havent really had much use for them so i have put off learning how to use them but i recentally found a stack of about 35 drilling pipes near my familys gas well and they all are about 3/16 inch thick and around 25 feet long so im hoping to cut them all up once i learn how to use the torches.

I'm envious, Red....sounds like you've been there a while and you keep "finding" stuff....sounds like heaven to me. Have you found things that you can break down for copper yet???....that's where it gets fun to me. I broke down two vacuum cleaners yesterday (I cannot understand tossing vacs and ceiling and box fans on the shred pile) and it only took about an hour....and they add a lot to my #2 copper pile. Tell us more about the farm. Is your grandpa able to tell you about things ? Was he a hoarder ? Sorry, I'm just jealous I guess. Keep scrappin"

i have been here for about 6 years, but we never really looked through much untill the last few years. sadly though my grandfather passed away a few years back so he isnt able to teach me how to use many of the tools and machinery he has down there (the cutting torches i mentioned before) also a stick welder. alot of the finds that i have been talking about have happened over the last 2 years. but yes i have found a few things to break down. i found about 3 wall ac units last year that i took apart for the copper aluminum radiator things and the copper tubing in side. also i kinda took apart a riding tractor but gave up after a day or 2 because i really had no idea what i was doing to it so it ended up just going in as is. and no need to be sorry about asking if he was a hoarder ha. he was of sorts. he kept things of use not like how some people on that show hoarders keep like a house full of newspaper or something. like we had 3 riding tractors that were all the same model when we moved here but only one worked and im guessing he used the other 2 for parts. also he has a huge stack of scrap lumber that is all like 2 to 4 feet long that he just had laying around. like the porch on one of the houses was made from all scraps like that with no board the same length and such. i guess its because he went through the depression and liked to use everything to its fullest. but alot of what he kept we dont even know what it is and it looks like alot of well scrap haha.

That grandpa of yours sounds like he was one of the good guys. You're lucky to use and appreciate his stuff.
