I have a question, anyone ever scrapped the panels from office cubicles? It seems like if you stripped off the carpet it should be steel underneath.

Never done it, but I'd imagine you could strip the carpeting off or even leave it on and get mixed price for it.

nope not yet..but if its steel an nothing else good...just leave the carpet on it.

My friend scrapped some a few years ago and they were steel. But I agree with easyrecycle, if your just scrapping them, leave the carpet on. Why do more work for no more in pay?

Take that carpet off! Use it and some scrap wood to make cat towers. THOSE things are expensive!

I grabbed some super thick walled cardboard tubes last year from the transfer station for this purpose. Now I am looking for old cubicles. My wife is going to kill me...

lol I've looked at the cat towers before. It's basically a concrete form tube (cardboard tube) with OSB ends for the cubby holes, 2x4 for the poles, more OSB for the base/landings, and rope for claw areas. All cheap enough. Just glue and staple carpet on to finish. No more than $50 maybe for a $150-$300 tower. (depending on location of course)

If you had the right market, and could find all the materials really cheap or free somebody could make a killing if you could keep the price under a hundred bucks.

Talk to contractors. They may have extra 2x4's from jobs, or tear downs. They don't need to look nice, just be straight. They get convered anyway. There's also a hardwood dealer nearby that uses OSB sheets for packaging and shipping, and they sell quarter to half sheet leftovers for like .50c. Rope, not sure where to get that manilla kind cheap, but I don't think it's too expensive to buy outright. Also, carpet places sell remnants for cheap too.

Guess it just goes to show that even if it's not scrap metal, it can still be reused!

Everything that gets picked up by me either gets reused or recycled. I've been very successful since I went with the zero landfill strategy.

I did a few cubes worth a year or so ago. The ones I broke down were extruded aluminum inside. Pop off the steel side caps, pull some screws and the carpeted panels. Should be an extruded frame inside.
