    Amazing what folks throw away

I just started scrapping after cashing in some aluminum from an above ground pool for over $500 got me hooked. I am just fooling around with it for now but my first day of looking around while going to and from work brought home about 30 cans, 3 lamps, a banged up folding chair, futon bed and a 6 foot high shelving unit that i guess is made of tin, light iron? Not sure what all the things are made of but will start cutting them into pieces and figure it out. I am excited about finding stuff after I just started looking around. Amazing what people just toss out. This forum is so great for the encouragement it brings and the info it provides.

Nice haul! Cans are aluminum. The 3 lamps could be anything, test them with a magnet. If they're magnetic, it's probably steel. If it's non magnetic and heavy, it's probably brass. The folding chair is probably aluminum, but check it with a magnet just in case. The futon and shelf are almost definitely steel.

Was it trash day in your neighborhood? That's a pretty good find for just driving around.

Check for college move-outs NOW. Even if some students moved out a week or two ago, they are still exiting apartments end of May. Much tossing of usable goods and metal items. End of June is also good because some of them have the apartment an extra month.

I did a li'l divin tonight after I got done fishing, came across several sets of 50 pounds of telecom wiring harness, about 40 foot of copper, and a just now tested and working halogen work light set including the stand for them.

Didn't catch any fish, but got some scrap.

I found practically new looking (no rust) push style lawn mower next to someone's trash bin in the alley. Works perfect. Keeping it for back-up if/when the power mower konks out.

Also found one of those angle iron bed frames with wheels, that someone on the boards just said recently was worth and easy $20 on Craigs. Queen size. No rust.

Stopped at 5 garage sales, and saw nothing worth buying that I needed or could resell. I found better stuff in the trash today!
