    Spring Clean-up

Last week of a 3 week clean-up in my suburb...competition is fierce but if a guy hangs in there you come accross pockets here and there. In addition to the scrap metal scored last week I got 3 lawnmowers too. 2 started on the first pull and the last started after adjusting the spark plug gap. Made $120 bucks on the 3 thanks to Craigslist and long grass from recent rain fall.

Out here in the corner of the state, our Spring & Fall cleanups only last a few days, as, being that the towns are tiny and spread out. Gotta love 'em though. Got a pickup load on Friday in a few minutes while passing through town. Mostly mowers, bicycles & grilles...even a big stainless grille.

Size: 74.5 KBThey divide our suburb into 3 sections and do 1 per week. They can come anytime during that week so most poeple put their stuff out on Sunday. When the newsletter came out with the dates and rules this year, some company(not sure who they know or a$$ they kiss) managed to get their name and number listed in there for people to call to have metal picked up. Still plenty left at the curb tho...pic is the pickins from 2 different days and about 12 hours of time. Mostly tin but some #1, lots of grills out and other alum frames etc but not to much copper or wire unless you wanted to start grabbing tvs. Not really into tvs as it's a pain to dispose of the leftovers and they are one of the things that aren't supposed to be put out for the clean-up.

KZ, isn't there a place in Denver that will buy your plastic from TV's and other things ?

Nice scores! I've only gotten the one pickup load. It'll all be over soon, but just haven't had the time. Phone has been ringing off the hook the past few days & I would not want to turn away any potential clientele...some of them become regulars, but that's good too.

I bet your guys went to the city council in advance and worked it out as a paid ad. I did that once...it was pricy & kind of worth it.

Not so much that the plastic is a problem, I can deal with that, it's the tubes. My trash company will take a couple here and there but not the quanity I would produce if I jumped in with both feet. I'm sure there might be other places in Denver that would take them, just need to take the time to research.

Graduation party for the 2nd of 3 kids this weekend so I needed to go to the yard for 2 reasons. First to get the place a little more presentable and second the money from picking up stuff during the spring clean-up is going to pay for the party. So here's how we fared:

    Sold on Craigslist:
    4 lawnmowers-$135
    Webber grill-$15
    Portable dog kennel-$15

    Turned in to the yard:
    #2 tin 3140 lbs@175 ton-$275
    Die cast zinc 24@.42lb-$10
    #2 copper 12@3.34lb-$40
    Yellow brass 37@2.05lb-$76
    Alum screen door 31@.57lb-$18
    Alum contaminated sheet 32@.44lb-$14
    Alum cast 97@.56lb-$54
    Stainless 24@.68lb-$16
    Stainless breakage 12@.31lb-$4
    Batteries 109@.26lb-$28
    #2 insulated copper 31@1.37lb-$42
    Power supplies 25@.15lb-$4
    Elec motors 171@.36lb-$62

    Total-$808

Maybe I should have broke some things down further to get more at the yard but it was a matter of "time's up pencils down" gotta gitter dun.

Spring has arrived here. When I see several cleanout piles, that's close enough.

    Spring trend?

Just trying to find (unsuccessfully) what the scrap prices do in the spring. Does anyone have a chart of that? I have a farm to clean up and was hoping to get the highest prices in March, but need cash soon and was wondering if the % goes way up or just a little in the spring.

Prices seem to trend upward starting now and go down in the spring/summer.

I tend to take my sweet time breaking down my spring hoard. Around here at least, prices go way down because well, so many people are doing it that the line is like two miles long. If you can, I'd hold out a bit.
