    CurbCo paid me bigtime

This afternoon I was doing my usual "long way home" trek through my town and spotted a large Free pile. Two towers, 3 printers and 2 CRT monitors. Got home and tore into this :

    Dell Optiplex GXpro

    looks really clean inside

This is my first PentPro chip ever. Ill be keeping it for my collection. I may try to sell the slot boards and mobo because they look really clean.

OK, so now I have a question for the guys who collect CPUs and chips. What is the best way to clean off the old dried paste off this chip without scratching or marring up the gold cap? Iv tried to use rubbing alcohol but it seems not to touch it. Also, whats the best thing to make it shine like a million bucks? Maybe polish it or buff it? Any ideas?

Nice find. Do you know if it was in working condition?

I've had good luck cleaning off thermal grease with used dryer sheets, but that was not crusty and dried...

I didn't try to test. I know I should have but I was sure there was a PentPro in it and was excited to dig in. When I work on older and vintage items I tend to be more careful and try not to break stuff. It would only take me a few minutes to reassemble things and test it. If I have time this weekend I may try to do it. I would probably get a better price on the boards if tested. I'll update this post if I test.

An update on this load I picked up. I got a chance to pop open the other computer I picked up yesterday in that free pile. Mother CurbCo is still paying me :

    IBM PS/2 30

If you try to put that first computer back together you will need to put some thermal paste on the cpu.

Thanks for the links Mickinreco. I always check Ebay sold section before i fully scrap any older equipment. With this load i also picked up some dot matrix printers but couldn't find any that had sold for anything worth while. I ended up smashing those up and pulling the stepper motors out cuz i got a guy for those. Hopefully i get some time this week to test the desktops.

You can part out standard layout and power supply AT and ATX motherboards and expect to get a sale. It is MUCH harder to sell a custom layout board (DELL for example) that probably used a custom power supply as well in pieces. If you bother to sell that PPro sell it as a system and make sure you spell out it is a PPro.
