ok on the average, Can you still make money on a car or truck if your buying them for $500?, I know some people here around me are offering between $150-$250...But at $500 is there still money in it? and if so....about how much...lets say with a 1999 s10 4x4

I've seen jokers offering as much as $900 for junk cars. I just can't see ANY money at those prices. If I had to guess, they are baiting and switching.

If that S10 still runs, I'd resell it. At the least sell usable parts off it if you have the space and time. Otherwise, you pay $500 for it and go to scrap, don't be surprised when less than $500 comes back your way.

Look on the door of that truck to see what it weighs, then figure out what your return would be.

Off the top of my head a 99 S-10 4x4 weighs about 3400 lbs. You would need to work really hard to make a profit if you paid $500.00.
Scrap prices are different all over, but I think most are around $10.00 $11.00 per 100lb. for scrap autos. Hope that helped you a little!

A 1999 s10 has a curb weight of 3243. Lets assume you drain the fluids and lose 200 pounds of that - now 3043#. Now lets say you remove the battery, radiator and catalytic converter and get $100 for them. It's now an "Incomplete Car" around here and will get you about $85/ton. You got approx a ton and a half, so $127 + $100 (for the battery etc) $227. I know my figures aren't exact, but you get the point. Even if you just hauled in the "Complete Car", the break-even point would be $335/ton.

Somebody 60 miles from me has a radio ad....150-650 for cars. Mind boggling.

lets do mick's 3243 x.1325 =430 you will get for it the converter is worth 60-80 so say 70 thats 500 4 al wheels the 60 minus 20 for fuel so you would make 40 after all of that.Not going to get rich but still made alittle money.

I bout a few junks last week for 500 each a rodeo and a blazer the rodeo brought 483 so i have 17 in the converter and wheels so i will make 100+ on it.The blazer i got 503 plus i spent 20 in fuel so i ahev 20 in the converter and wheels so i will make 130+ on it.

You can make money just have to know what stuff weighs and what your yard is paying.

The yard that I sell to pays $12.50 per 100lbs for cars. When I buy them, I pay $10.00 based on the data tag weight, IF the car is "whole". I bring it in to our facility, and scrap it down of the "easy grab items", including AL intakes, AL brackets, Cats, Rads, Batts, and as much of the wiring harness that I can get. Also the AL rocker panels in the "OLD cars" door frame. Tires and rims also get snatched and GOOD tires resold and rims sold on the next load of Shred. Of course the AL rims sold separately.
From the time I start on a car until it is finished, I have about 4-5 hours, including 2 hours of travel time.
My avg. return is $150-$200 per car. Maybe it's just me, but that's not bad for a half day work.

I'd agree, $200 isn't bad, but you would have paid $324 for that s10; not $500.

yeah i try and like to make atleast 100 per car or maybe alittle less if i have to give alittle more to buy more.
