Buying old machines and putting windows7

hey guys after checking the forums I could not find an answer to my question. Let's say I formatted 20 laptops that had windows xp on it but now I wanna upgrade them to windows 7. What's the best way to get 20 of these cd keys.. Obviously I could use a validation crack however I would like to sell these and not end up in jail from selling them on eBay. Should I just save myself the hassle and sell them as no operating system. Thxx

Most XP hardware are not designed to handle Win7 or even Win8. You might be able to get them to run Vista and that's a big if. To answer your other questions, I'd sell or list them with drives wipes otherwise you're going to have to purchase legitimate keys from Microsoft.

Here is my answer...........Dell 630 will easily run WIN 7............I suggest not selling on Ebay without a keycode as you will get banned quickly............I have discs for every OS keycodes etc...............The 630 will not sell for much unless upgraded to WIN 7 (my opinion)............There are many ways to get the codes but the proper way is to buy them from Microsoft........Hope that helps

Just barely and that's wil hyper-threading turned on. Windows 7 even basic sucks the space out of memory, video, and cpu. Microsoft at one time recommended your machine have 3gb of memory, at least a 500gb hard drive, and a quad-core cpu not to mention a high-end graphics card to take in all the Windows 7 offered. I was able to get win7 installed and ran on a Dell Optiplex with 2gb of memory, 100gb hard drive, a descent graphics card and a dual-core cpu with hyper-threading turned on. Ran slow as molasses till the hard drive died and the dvd burner stopped reading discs.

Point is you can get win7 to install and run but it will run slow as molasses no matter how much memory or hard drive space you throw at it, and not many XP machines will let you fully upgrade to a quad-core cpu or memory past 2gb. Especially Dell or Emachine.

I'd sell em without an operating system so whoever buys em can put whatever they want on it. I would however remove the sticker on the bottom that has the old product key as a security precaution.

Not enough apparently lol. I've been around computers and electronics since I was 10 - built my first tower when I was 13. I've received and torn down computers and electronics since then from either people I knew or people they knew. That Optiplex in particular came from a church in Florida and was given as a gift to my dad when he decided he wanted his own computer. Point? I'm a nut ^.^

Possibly. If you sold em without an OS on Ebay with a buy it now of $50 and sold em all, you'd make roughly $1438 and a profit of roughly $638. This doesn't take into account shipping and those are Canadian values.

If you're tech savvy, you could consider installing Linux (Ubuntu is supposed to be very user friendly). This might hurt the resale value though. You could always just sell it as is and then offer to install Linux. With 20-still working laptops, though, I think I'd try selling them to a repair or resale store.

    Okay .... i'll bite.

If you're not sure about the machine download the win 7 upgrade adviser. That would probably be the most objective way of telling if it's suitable for an upgrade or not. Otherwise, check out the Microsoft website and see what they recommend for hardware.

I don't have any experience with Ubantu but it's said to be heavier on system resources that Microsoft operating systems.

Windows 8 seems to be lighter on system resources. Maybe it was designed to be used on tablets & other small devices ?

You might want to try and find out the date of manufacture on the laptops. They aren't as durable as a tower. After four or five years you start running into hardware problems with em'. It's questionable as to whether or not they're worth refurbishing.
