Scrapper Morals & our 10 commandments

Black Steel recently started a thread on scrappers bill of rights which was interesting reading and valuable insight. Instead of addressing our rights, I wanted to start a thread on our values and morals. My beliefs are strong, but I will not influence this tread. Please provide your insight as to what our 10 commandments should be. From here we can develop our Bill of Rights just as our founders did. This could be a combination of serious and humorous, the choice it yours.

To the admin. and moderators, this is not a religious thread, but a guide line for proper scrapper etiquette.

Charlton Heston (Moses) and I share a birthday, so I'll certainly jump in on 10 commandments!

Thou shall not steal. Ask if you can take it. Any doubts, leave it for another day.

Thou shall treat others fairly. We, as a group, do not need to squeeze every penny out of a deal. There is always tomorrow and repeat business is more important than a one time score.

Thou shall work hard and smart. The people who depend on you are worth it.

The one that is doing nothing shall not interrupt the one that doing something. I might just put this up over my work bench.

    Honesty is the best policy:
Integrity cannot be bought! And once you get the reputation as a thief, a lowlife, or a dirtbag.. you can't scrap enough/bank enough in your lifetime to erase in peoples mind that you are "dirty"
I'm so into scrapping.. When my Steel Toe Boots Wear out, I cut the Steel out of them and recycle the Toe!

If someone wants something out of your scrap pile give it to them, you never know what they might give you to scrap.

Recycle materials properly. If you do not have the capacity to deal with hazardous materials, do not take on the job or the scrap no matter how tempting it may be. Illegally and unethical disposing of CRTs, Freon, lead, etc. will all come back to bite us in the A in the at some point; its not worth the few $$ today for expensive reparations in the future.

Be clean and well-spoken. Courtesy and presentability go a long way.

This one rings true for me. It's called Desiderata and was written by a man by the name of Max Ehrman back in the 1920's

    ============================

Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons.

Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.

Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.

Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth.

Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.

Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.

    Thou shalt not gossip.

Whenever possible avoid speaking ill of another scrapper. Sometimes that's unavoidable as in the case of someone ripping off the yard and ruining things for everybody. If you must speak against someone make very sure that you have your facts straight.

If you're out curb shopping and run across something personal keep it to yourself.

I have developed and practice a few personal "Guiding Factors" that I use to make my daily decisions in life and business. These are a few of my most important: 1. Always be honest with yourself (why would one not?). 2. Every one needs to work and should be fairly compensated (why should anyone not?). 3. All business transactions and endeavors need to be good for myself, those working on my behalf, and those that choose to do business with me (if not why bother?). These are just a few of my personal "COMMANDMENTS", probably have more than ten, not saying Moses didn't have it right or that I do. It's just what helps me put my best effort towards every day aspects of life!

This one is one of my favorites.

    The Man In The Glass
    Peter Dale Wimbrow Sr.

When you get what you want in your struggle for self
And the world makes you king for a day
Just go to the mirror and look at yourself
And see what that man has to say.

For it isn’t your father, or mother, or wife
Whose judgment upon you must pass
The fellow whose verdict counts most in your life
Is the one staring back from the glass.

He’s the fellow to please – never mind all the rest
For he’s with you, clear to the end
And you’ve passed your most difficult, dangerous test
If the man in the glass is your friend.

You may fool the whole world down the pathway of years
And get pats on the back as you pass
But your final reward will be heartache and tears
If you’ve cheated the man in the glass.
