    AC exploded on me (noob)

Edited by admin to include original post, which was since edited by the OP - Other new guys can learn from this.

Hi everyone, i've picked up scrapping a few months ago and ive made a decent amount of cash so far, one thing I havent came across yet was an AC. until today, I saw some guy hauling it out to his trash can, I stopped and asked if he would mind if I took it. He said not at all, go ahead. I throw it in my two seater and this thing was huge, not your average AC, like an industrial one or something. anyways, I cut a piece of copper pipe going to the little compressor and the pressure from it exploded and shot some nasty stuff up into the air for like 30 seconds. it scared me a little. After running away and watching from a distance i finished taking the whole thing apart. So my question is what is the proper legal way?? and what do i do with the aluminum radiator thing with copper pipe in it? how do i seperate? and what do I do with the compressor? and also, ive never dealt with electric motors. it has a decent amount of copper in it, but should I even bother? what should motors be sold as? Thanks for teaching me! :

ADDITIONAL CLARITY FOR ALL FUTURE READERS

DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT SNIP AIR CONDITIONER LINES UNTIL THE UNIT HAS BEEN PROPERLY, LEGALLY, AND SAFELY EVACUATED OF FREON ACCORDING TO STANDARDS SET FORTH BY THE EPA. FAILURE TO DO SO CAN RESULT IN HEFTY FIVE FIGURE FINES, JAIL TIME AND/OR INABILITY TO OBTAIN FUTURE CERTIFICATIONS!

Rule number 1. Dont cut the lines unless properly drained of the refrigeration. big fine if caught.

They probably will at reduced rates provided you give them fingerprints and a urine sample. Motors should be sold as motors, or as OM (other material). We will teach you, just keep asking the questions Scraper!!!

Wow, I am sure most of did the same thing when we first started (cut the lines). But now we know better. "No wonder this forum is so inactive" I say the OP is inactive as he needs to read the info that is here! I would think now that he knows what happens when you cut the lines he will no longer do it...

That freon that blew out in your face is worth more per pound than anything that condenser is made out of. Just ask next time....dont pull the yellow wire on the bomb then tell everyone they suck because you blew up.

The reason I got pissed was because every person posting had to be a smart ass. So don't start being polite now, and tell me I shouldn't fuss the forum and community, that wasn't my plan. Until you (bear) and everyone else had to poke fun at the point of the thread. What you may consider a jab, I consider a defense against the immaturity here. Now, after I "took jabs" at everyone, your going to attempt to try and make me look stupid by turning around and being respectful and saying we all make mistakes and life is a learning thing and all that. Was it really that hard to say that in the first place? I mean really. I think its time to grow up and stop trying to impress all your little online buddies. And trust me I don't need connections, I do just fine by myself.

Edit: the maximum fine is 37500$ and the law states that "if freon is INTENTIONALLY released" which it wasn't. So I think its time you guys all just relax. Your not going to get skin cancer from the ozone hole over my house. Sheesh.

IF making you look silly had been my intention, it wouldn't be difficult, and, IF you chose to speak with them, you'll discover they would believe you "INTENTIONALLY" cut the tube

If you cut the line, then it was intentional. Ignorance of consequences doesn't negate responsibility.

I cleaned up this thread a bit, added a nice note, closed it and I'm going to make it a sticky in the hazards section. The title says it all, the replies say it all, this should never happen.
