Catalytic Converter "Class" and worth? (BMW and Porsche) I researched!

    Hi,

New to the forum so this is my first post! I've searched a TON but am still a bit confused about catalytic converter classing/grouping and what some I have are worth. I don't want to get taken advantage of and it would help to have some knowledge behind me.

Long story short I'm moving and trying to clear out some stuff. I pull out basically 3 cats that I had from now sold cars and wanted to sell them to get a little bit back (or at least pay for the U-Haul...).

The first one seems pretty straight forward but the other two I'm not sure about.

    This is the first one:

    - 1989 BMW 325is FULL cat. Roughly 33"x 9" x 3". Good shape, no "rattling" or pieces falling out at all. Weighs a ton...

Class: I think an EXTRA LARGE Import?

    This is the second one.

    - 2005 Porsche Cayenne Turbo cats. Roughly 11" x 9" x9" (round). GREAT shape, no rattling or pieces falling out. Honeycombs looks good. Very heavy as well...

    Class: No clue...

Thoughts? Might need to start keeping my eye out for things like this at the yards!

    Thanks!

stop! stop! stop! do not!!!!!! DO NOT!!!!!! sell these to a scrap yard. you have found what cat scrappers consider two of the 5 crown jewels of cats.

find a real cat buyer. dont know todays price but both of those were worth well over $200 ea. back when I was into cats.

Oh that would be awesome! If you guys know of some good places that will work with me remotely I'll be more than happy to check them out! I've been low-balled I think already at $225 for all 3.

Awesome thanks! I found that one and the first I'm pretty confident you're right, the second I haven't seen. I doubt Porsche Cayenne Turbo cats come around too often!
Awesome links thank you for providing them! I've used a couple and found what I think is an exact image of the BMW one but not for the other two.

You can tell it is a foil by the spiral pattern in the honeycomb

The bmw one is a x large foreign.
The other 2 are foreign wires which are bought by the pound.I would say you have anywhere from $250-$300 worth of converters.

I will also by them if you want to ship them.Thx!

Most buyers will grade the BMW cat as exotic, or possibly extra large foreign if they don't have an exotic category. It has 3 separate honeycomb "biscuits" (some similarly-sized BMW/Mercedes cats only have 2), so it grades pretty high. As others have said, the Cayenne cats are foil or wire. That kind of cat looks like it's filled up with rolled-up corrugated cardboard. Depending on the buyer, those are bought either by the piece or pound. Hard to tell with nothing in the picture to give any idea of scale, but it would be either med or large foil.

Eta. Old eyes reading posts on a phone screen make mistakes! Just noticed the ruler in the photo. Locally, those would be medium sized foils. Some buyers would pay you for a large though, because it is high grade import material. Again, that's only if it isn't being bought by the pound.

Hmmm I will keep that in mind. The best "offers" I've had from online places are $232 for the set. There is a local place that I'm going to check out later this week (I have some scrap steel and aluminum as well) that I'll run over there. Interesting in SC you need to register for scrap with the sheriff's department. So need to do that first...

Awesome thank you for the description and clarification! I'll be sure to use that when discussing with others in the future. Hopefully it will be a win win for the buyer and myself!

Unfortunately not. I'm 5 hours away in Charleston, SC but I do get up there maybe once a year.
