Do you give clients a receipt?

Was sitting here and this thought came to me.

Does anyone give customers/clients a receipt for metals they buy, or have given to them? My main concern would be if someone gave me a pile of scrap, and after I haul it out they turn around and say I stole it, or I owe them or whatever.

Wouldn't be much more effort to have a 2 part receipt book describing the service/date of removal/address and have them sign off on it.

    Thoughts?

I do on occasion. One time I didn't when my gut SHOULD have said otherwise - I bought an 18 ton pile of body parts, engines etc from a junk yard. Took a week to get everything hauled out. In the meantime, he moved a pile of rotors I'd bought to another pile I'd bought and replaced the 1st pile with another bunch of rotors I hadn't bought without telling me. I started loading the 2nd bunch and got accused of trying to steal them. Fortunately, I HAD taken pictures so when I went home and checked the computer, I could tell they weren't the same rotors. I paid in two stages and when I went to give him the final payment, he said that wasn't as much as we'd agreed on, but wouldn't tell me what he understood we had agreed on. This was supposed to lead to a monthly pickup for me but I didn't even bother getting a pile of hoods I'd bought - I just loaded the tractor on the trailer and left. Haven't been back. Moral of the story - Listen to your gut and have something written down. I don't for small amounts or regulars.
People may laugh at me, but that's ok. I laugh all the way to the bank.
