The yard I use will not accept them unless you are a business. Even if you deal with them daily, they will not accept them from people not operating a " scrap company" or tow company. Have to be a legitimate business.

Ya know.. I hate stories like these.. My thought is.. You want a converter? Hunt and search and scratch for people who sell junk cars.. buy yourself a trailer, outfit your truck to haul it.. then work your tail off to buy a car, and get the converter. I cannot tell you how many cars I have found that the converters were "already stolen" before I got to them. Now my cynical side on a few of these guys: They know they are worth money, cut them off and core them.. others.. well I really believe that they were stolen. After now being a first-hand victim of an entire VEHICLE being stolen off private property.. some dudes out stealing converters.. doesn't begin to enter my realm of "unreal" Sad times, and tougher for all of us who work honestly and hard to do it right!
I'm so into scrapping.. When my Steel Toe Boots Wear out, I cut the Steel out of them and recycle the Toe!

Scrapped 4 cars last week and got 0 converters. The cars were free so didn't get upset figured the owner did it. Or some kids came around, the cars were sitting on the back of a field.

Dang.. You almost have to lock up even stuff you think may be "junk" just so people don't decide to help themselves!

the problem with convertor theft isn"t the fence there is really no way to prove where the car to convertor placement is about a yearago car dealers were getting hit nightly then it just sorta stopped no arrests nobody took any balme for it my guess is mobile nomadic theives after you hit it once you know they are gonna be aftermarkets so it"s not worth the time

ive not heard anything about it in a while, I agree with the nomadic theory, a few guys with sawzalls traveling the country, I may watch to much tv but looks like they could track hotel room stays with thefts and find a common link

Was just reading an article the other day about car thefts, and how the thiefs are now focusing on stealing the parts vs stealing whole cars. I guess all the thiefs getting busted in those bait cars smartened them up. Easier to just steal the parts and roll on then jack the whole car, dump it, part it out, or whatever they all do. I'll have to try and find it again, the article that is. Was an interesting read.

Then again..anyone who lives in NYC or near it, or any other big city knows..You leave a car on the side of the road you can come back 2 hours later an the thing is stripped down and gutted. Guess the the thieves living outside the city caught on.

where I'm at, every couple months you read about them being stolen out of car lots. The police said its a group that moves around.
