What goes in your shred pile?

Starting a new thread always runs the risk of drawing the ire of the forum but I swear, I looked. I really don't know what it is exactly, what the yards call it, nor exactly what goes in there. Light iron, mixed metal/plastic, labor intensive scrap. Please check in. Thanks!

In my pile is nuts, bolts, tin, smaller steel bits, computer carcasses, covers from cd drives, mower handles, and any other mixed metal (mixed with a little plastic). My #1 is heavy pipe, pressure plates, wheel rotors, engine blocks, etc.

Light Iron - Anything that has something that will stick to a magnet and won't go anywhere else.

No offense intended , but I've sometimes gotten better search results for smf archives by using Google and adding "scrapmetalforum" as a keyword than by just looking here.

..and is less than 1/4" thick.

Anything 1/4" or thicker goes in with #1 steel.

also be sure your plastic has at least a few screws in it to call it shred and don't "hide" things in appliances.

coax cable, low grade boards, light bulbs all get mixed in with my sheet iron / steel as we don't have a shread cat by me

Anything that sticks to a magnet or will take way to much time to tear apart for little reward.

If I am tearing something apart for the precious metals and find it is taking to much time, I will toss it in the shred pile. Time is money, and its not worth spending to much time ripping some things apart for a few ounces of aluminum, brass, or copper.

Good point, CMHN. When I first started I spent hours peeling every hair of copper that I could find...that meant tearing apart every tiny little motor. I learned. But I still tear into those big motors.....love that big hunk of copper !
