Portable Scale ???

Not much time for online today, (home PC out for now)

Anyway, (long story short) ,been wondering about a portable scale so I can check weight and pay service stations (especially, but others too) for scrap.



Best I can think of was a pallet-jack we used in the factory which had a digital scale built in. BUT for my truck right now, even that would be a little large.

Anybody have advice, or a link for what I'm thinking???

I am TOTALLY re-thinking my "route" based on this idea.
I am also thinking it will enable me to get a larger truck , drive a HUGE route, and get the most for my scrap at the end of this "route" I'm thinking of.

I just use a shipping scale I acquired in a load of scrap.

pros: it is very professional looking.. I think it instills confidence in the customer

Cons: requires AC power.

Reelman can you use one of those small inverters? I had one that pluged in to the cigerette lighter and would rund a small tv. I would think your scale would not use much power, Mike.

Bathroom scales would work for that if you don't need anything super precise. For about $200 or so you can get small platform scales that run off of either batteries or a 110V plug-in (works off an inverter in the lighter) that comes with a remote display head, reads in lbs. or kgs. (handy in Canada), and actually takes quite a bit of abuse. It definitely does help the impression you make on some customers, compared to either a bathroom scale or guessing at weights.

Been looking for something cheap and with a good weight capacity, this definitely would work. Every scale I looked at was $70-$150.

That's the one we use for mobile scrap buys along with a 55 gallon drum. We used that in the shop before we upgraded to a 5k capacity 4'x4' floor scale.

Might not be the best option for most items. Digital fish scale and a 5 gallon bucket would work for some things.

I think I'll probably go with THIS ONE I found.

Seems like even a 55 gallon drum will fit on it, and seems like a 55 gal. drum loaded will never be more than the weight capacity either.

Well thanks, I found it on my own while away, as well as getting a new truck, and inheriting some $$$ towards my business.

I picked up one at Sam's Club. It's good up to 400 lbs in .1 lb intervals and can be used with AC or batteries. If you think this might be what you're looking for, PM me and I will check what model it is.

I'm concentrating on E-scrap So I don't feel I need a large max weight, better accuracy seems to be more important for my use. This one is accurate to .1 oz and will weigh down to .5 oz
This one goes up to 330 with .5 oz accuracy

What do you guys think???? Maybe I need to buy two?

i have two.

a shipping scale which can do .1lb and a pocket jeweler's scale which can do .05g. between those two, i always know what i have

I'm leaning toward the 110lb one for now. If I need more than 110 lbs I'll continue to use the bathroom scale for a while. I have a reloading scale that does grains, penny weight,grams and oz but It maxes out a t 50gr. should be useful with the acid test kit if I come across gold scrap.
While we're talking scales what about calibration. Is a 500g weight a good choice? 1000g here

Hey Jaydeee, I got one of those off e-bay, 330lbs uses 9v batteries or ac. Works good for me and the price was right.
