Without a photo it is hard to picture. With that being said, could it be a very old break part of some sort? You know to stop something. Being that he found it to 95% aluminum it could be a alloy of asbestos and aluminum/metal.

Just a shot in the dark without better description.

Interesting....you should send me a nice size chunk of it, just in case its something crazy rare, or some undiscovered alien material Lol, seriously though sounds like it could turn into an interesting find, hope to see some photos soon.

Looking at it again yesterday the straight part is a sparkly orange substance - a piece broke off in the truck and I hadn't noticed it when taking it out. The sanded part in the second picture next to the bill is a dull flat gray color, solid. I don't know what kind of rock would be sparkly orange or if thats even what it is but its an odd piece for sure!

Lol Dee! The grey part has to be some kind of metal because it sparked but not sure why metal would be pressed between slabs of stone like that. The protrusions almost look like they were pipes of some sort. I'm going to research the area deeper to see what may have been there, the only thing I can think of is a sawmill from looooooooooooooooooooooooooooong ago (pre 1900) but would this be something from that? Would they have used stone slabs mixed in with the metal part? It still doesn't answer what kind of metal it is.

After looking again, I would have to appraise it for at least $5.00.

Sorry I could not help myself.

I think you mentioned that you found this along a riverbed, maybe it's a left over part from an old water powered grist mill. (flower mill) That was all the rage back then, in fact we still have a operating mill close by.

It's a sedimentary solidification.......A rock formed of rocks, sand, mud, organics etc, in layers over a long period of time.
Nice rock tho.....very worthy of being a nice garden ornament.

    old water powered grist mill
Back then the mill used old stone wheels to grind the grain and maybe for the gears also,,,

Should we be looking at the metal or the 5 dollar bill?...I was looking at the dollar bill...lol jk

Not sure what it is but I don't think its a rock because it looks man made to me. Its odd an would take to a bigger yard for them to test.

It is a sedimentary rock.. forms in layers over time as water deposits different types of sediment and agregate carried in by glaciers and floods...I see lots of them Just take a hammer to that sucker and you will know.
There is nothing uniform enough to be hand crafted and rock will cast sparks when a grinder is put to it.

But how did the two 'plates' as I'll call them get so perfectly placed? Both are the sparkly orange in between the gray stuff. I can understand the different deposits at different times but this seems too precise. Would rock read as aluminum on the yard gun even though he said it wasn't?

Break some off and smash it with a hammer and put the torch to it.
Where do all or most metals originate?
    ;?)

I don't think so... being as there were neither Druids (circa 200 BC) or Celtics (circa 500 BC - 500 AD) in North America in those years. About another 1000-2000 years before any Europeans stepped foot onto the Americas, and I don't think they would have brought anything 1000 years old or older with them.
