Scrap Steel, Non-Ferrous, and Core Dealers/Yards in or near Columbus, IN

Kroot Corporation- State Street, Columbus, IN- Good well established local business, fair prices on steel, not my favorite place to take non ferrous but that's just me. A lot of people drive past closer yards to come here, probably for good reason. They buy Ferrous and Non-Ferrous. They also take cars whole (non processed), as long as battery and fuel tank are removed (tank can be loose inside trunk or passenger compartment, just must be dropped and not full). With Non-Ferrous, they assume you have prepared it as much you wish, and do not give pointers about how you could have made more $$. This is a very large establishment and deals in large volumes, also many locals bring in cans with bicycles, they welcome all. They pay cash up to roughly $200, anything above that they write you a check.

ISA- 4th St. I think, in Seymour, IN- Don't know much about them, but I do know they take cars whole as long as there is no battery in it. They buy Ferrous and Non-Ferrous.

River Metals Recycling- S. Monfort St., Greensburg, IN- Good established business, I like dealing with them, fair pricing, clean organized establishment, the non ferrous guy is very fair and good to point out how you could make more money on it. I like pretty much everything about this place except that they only have one scale to drive across (so you have to go through line twice) and the lady at the window is kinda grouchy some days (nice others?). Usually very little wait time here. Pricing is always good here. They give you a printed out ticket with a barcode, then you go to their ATM and scan the ticket and it dispenses cash. Pretty cool deal. They take cars whole with battery removed but require title for all autos (we have taken derby cars there without title, but otherwise they require them). You must also sign a waiver that the refrigerants have been removed.

Core Capitol- Edinburgh, IN- Good business, fair pricing, they buy all auto cores, engines, transmissions, everything. Generally highest core prices on most things. They do a large volume of business but their yard is a pain to get into with a truck and trailer, you basically pull in and back out. Kinda stupid but I suppose they have outgrown the place over the years. Will give you a printed out freshly updated price sheet upon request. Pays in cash on everything. Walk-ins welcome (don't need to be a large dealer)

Legend Smelting- Edinburgh, IN- Good business, clean and organized establishment, fair prices. They buy non ferrous and some core items, mostly buy cores per pound (better than scrap, but better off for most things to go down the road to Core Capitol). Their pricing is neck and neck or slightly better than Core Capitol on catalytic converters, and sometimes is better than Core on non-ferrous. You really need to do your homework to find out which place is better to take what items, one place is much better on some things, whereas the other place is better on other things. Legend pays cash up to $5000, amounts larger than that they will write you a check. This place deals in large quantities as well, but walk-ins welcome (don't need to be a large dealer).

These are the main places around here, and the ones that I deal with. There is another scrap dealer in Seymour that I can't recall the name of, never been to there or to ISA. The place in Greensburg I like dealing with, but most of my cars go to Kroot here in Columbus, its slightly closer and I can take them there without titles, and I almost always drop the tanks anyway to salvage fuel from them. Non Ferrous and catalytic converters I take to Legend (depending on who's paying the most for Non-Ferrous). Core items I take to Core Capitol. Pretty much all of these businesses overlap each other on what they buy, but none buys "Everything".

If you work or deal in this area feel free to send me a private message to discuss any of these businesses, I'll be glad to offer any advice I can or help any way I can.

Not entirely the same- if paid cash I save a trip to the bank LOL Cash is king in my book and I deal only in and with cash, checks are a hassle. I keep good records of everything and have a file box in my truck all receipts go into, but I hate taking time to go to the bank when I wouldn't ordinarily need to.

You are right sir it will save you the trip...i just meant for tax reasons..many think that just cause you get cash you dont have to claim it..NOT TRUE! There is still a paper trail because the scrap yard isnt going to pay your taxes lol
