    Battery/Laptop shipping

    So it's been a good year since the battery rules have gone into effect for shipping. Has anyone gotten hassled on shipping batteries? Are you labeling the boxes/gaylords as hazardous? Is your BOL getting labeled? I'm just curious, want to put the laptops and batteries in a gaylord. I know from past shipping experience they want the batteries either in the product, or in a separate holder. Just curious if they are watching it very close.

    P.S. I would just drive it to a local buyer, but that buyer doesn't want my business. Oh well. Seems buyers in this state are kind of shady.

    Not sure if this is a real question or just an inside dig at a buyer you are not agreeing with but I either leave battery in device or tape contacts....never had issue....knock on wood

    Only half a dig.. never got to selling any product with buyer, he didn't want my stuff. Anyways.. 1-4 laptops batteries I don't have a problem with. It's 30-50 laptops in varying degrees of destroyal and odd ball batteries that I'm questioning. If I slap the hazmat label on, I'm sure they'll look in the gaylord. Last time I just loaded them all up and drove to Ohio.

    If you're shipping that many laptops, it's probably going via pallet. Gorven is the one you need to ask about that.

    Speaking of which Gorven, I have a pallet of laptops that will be going out in a couple weeks. I need the answer to this question too

    If possible keep the batteries in the laptops if not tape the contacts. I havent had any problems shipping the laptop batteries at all. Carriers have not been inspecting closely but if there not taped I wont ship them.

    I've always wondered what the freight requirements were on lithium batteries. My pile of batteries is at 250 pounds and increasing every day. Do you require the taped batteries to be separately packed or can they be piled in a single pallet?

    When I shipped my batteries last time, I boxed them, but not individually. Like 10-15 per box. That said, did I do it the proper way? I have no freaking clue....

    I guess I'll just take them to the local scrap yard for 10 cents a lb, and give away the laptops for a 12 pack of Buble.

    Or others reading this could contact a forum buyer and ask them directly what their procedure for shipping is. Where or where would I find a buyer of this stuff????? Perhaps the guy in the entry above this one or at the top of each page of this forum "Scrap Buyers and Sellers".

    But I have learned to save up enough good material to either ship a pallet or take a trip and haul it with me to my ewaste buyer.

    Yeah, I could ask a forum buyer, but from what I'm experiencing here..... I don't want to pay for the semi when it burns up from improperly packed batteries. Did you know there are different hazmat levels for different batteries? Taping and placing into items isn't 100 percent perfect.

    P.S. To the person who contacted me.. I'd swear you were an engineer. If you don't know that reference, look up engineer and hot air balloon joke.

    DOT regs on taped/covered Li battery shipments only specify special handling requirements per container over 66 pounds. This doesn't apply to a pallet; as I understand it, you can have a dozen-plus 65# battery boxes on a pallet but if any singular container of Li batts tips over 66#, that box and its container move into a different regulatory oversight.

    Don't tape and replace batteries. Only tape (or bag) when the battery is shipped loose and apart from its parent device (i.e., a laptop). Batteries as a part of an item are covered by yet another level of oversight, one which is much more forgiving.

    Where things really fall apart is if the Li batteries show damage, like swelling or scorch marks. This classifies them as "DDR" and they must be handled as the specific hazmat class for those batteries.

    All shipments bearing Li batts need to be marked as such, specifying that no container weighs more than 66#, and must include a note which forbids sea or air transport.

    I'm sure there is more than this that is actually worth knowing or doing but we have moved hundreds of shipments, including all different sizes of batteries. Doing all of this which I have mentioned in the same way, every time, has been acceptable to all of our buyers and processors, to the best of my knowledge.

    Here in NV haven't noticed any change and we ship full gaylords to California where trucks are inspected with regularity.
