The only competition we worry about is the landfill because more e waste is being discarded there than to responsible E Waste companies like ours and my "competition". If you did your research you would understand the dangers of donating computers to so called non profits that have no use for them. I don't see a lot of non profits giving out multiple lots of I series (except for one based in New York and Atlanta ) and the amount of machines we take in from non profits is huge . Unfortunately most of them still have hard drives with info on them . We specialize in data destruction and security all at no charge. We have 3 warehouses filled to capacity ( we are looking to hire really good dismantlers if you know any) and are very much ingrained in the community. We have given out and trained people on our business model and helped them set up brand new businesses in Birmingham, SC, and Jacksonville. We did not charge a cent for this and don't even buy material from 2 of them. We have quietly had computers rebuilt and had legal software loaded on them for multiples of people from friends children to a couple of Forum members who couldn't afford a computer all done without fanfare or promotion. We give teachers supply kits for kids each year so they don't have to go into their own pockets. We sponsor Stem Fair awards here and our Earth Day event every year gets bigger and more fun all done out of pocket . Does all this make us good people. Pretty much so.!!!! So to sum it up I am not sure why you felt this was about resenting and knocking down competition but you should sit down and watch it again with Grandma and see if you get the gist of it this time. If your ever in Tampa I would love for you to swing by and see our operation or if you by chancew are going to be in New Orleans in September at the convention I will gladly sit down and get to know you. Ill be the one having dinner and drinks with my competition ....
I guess we all have our own way of looking at things.

There's a whole backstory going on that you just explained. Really .. context is everything.

My prima facie (first look opinion ) would be that you and the charities are in the same market area. You're both competing for the same resource. It may not be their intention, but, they are taking money out of your pocket and threatening your livelihood. To make things worse .... they aren't even doing it right.

Not saying you're a bad guy, just sayin' that you might be human and feel a bit of resentment toward them.

    ====================================

Okay .... So what do you do with that ? My personal opinion would be that it's best to mind one's own business and not attempt to make problems for others.

That's what i've found to work best for myself in life. I seldom volunteer an opinion one way or another on my competitors. If asked, and i can say something positive, then that's a good thing. If it's someone that i REALLY wouldn't recommend then i simply say that i wouldn't recommend that person and leave it at that.

Bottom line: It's better to keep things to yourself. Once you go on record as saying something you might have to defend it in court. It's a big bad world out there and the last thing you need are legal problems when you're running a business.

Scrapah: ?????????????????????????????????????????????????? ????????????????????????. Forgive me in advance since I was born and raised in New Jersey but WTF are you talking about.( Just so you know I am not really asking or wanting to know it is more of a laughing off statement) I wish you well but your opinion is irrelevant and not constructive to my thread here. I must warn you also that If you bring Grandma in it again I wont be so nice to her as I was in my previous statement

    Apologies for the double post.

Check out this link: Dell Reconnect: Donate any brand of computer to Goodwill | Dell

Do you see how it goes against what you're saying in the video ?

Maybe Dell gets pissed off because you're calling their reputation into question ?

Boy, this thread went bad fast. Back in the day I would've gotten my hand slapped so fast.

A few things to always remember

Somebody/Someone is bigger, faster, and stronger.

Never rip on someone for opinions. Spreading of false "facts" are fair game. Opinions never.

There is a long list of people who don't post here anymore. It's not because they out grew the website. I think they are a little humble-ized now.

I'm just a hobbyist. We're not in competition for the same resource. My prime gig is something entirely different. The computers and recycling are just something i do for fun & relaxation.

I have been in business for about twenty years now though. It is a hard old world out there. When you're in business you're on your own. One of the hard realities is that you have to be out for yourself.

First and foremost : You have to serve your own self interest.

If you can't do that then you are useless to yourself and everyone else.

That's why i ask myself: How does this video help to further YOUR self interest ?

BTW: There's absolutely nothing wrong with doing that AND serving a greater good at the same time.

I've been in the TV/Video production biz since 1989. I will only comment on the production aspect of the video. Simply because I am not an e-waste scrapper.

    1. A little light hearted music would pick up the pace.

    2. I am the idiot general public. @ 2:03 Tell me why I should remove the hard drive.

Just my .02. I really like the video and the production of it.

EDIT: Semi-sinister music for the donating part.... Light-hearted music for the URBANECYCLING part.

I just watched your video and loved it. I have first hand experienced with the very exact situation you described with donations to charities. Some, not all, charities have little or no regard for "useless" items they get constantly.

I love the drawing visuals. Great Job.

    Same here, great video.
. I have realised that Habitat/Salvation army/etc do not sell computers here either, just the keyboards and monitors.

I give them $5 and pick thru their waste skip, by the time I have got everything I want, they saved $ thru not having to dump it, saved space & can fit twice as much in now.

Unless your a politician NEVER introduce negativity into an advertisement. If you want to show where alot of e waste is going now, vs where it could go great. It's better to leave it as an open ended question like- "Hey, do you know where your computer goes when you donate it? Neither do they." Do not outright tell people what NOT to do. The brain doesn't respond to that.

    Hope that helps.

Just to clarify what we do with our videos.. We do not advertise in print radio or television although we have been featured on all three mediums. The videos are made to be put on our website/LinkedIn/Facebook page and YouTube. Why? We get 90% of our commercial business off the website and Google searches. We have never paid a dime for SEO or ad words etc. It is all done organically. Google rewards your strength of SEO when they see you updating and adding content. So we do not mass market our videos and they are not really an advertisement but a path to hopefully entertain and help us behind the scenes. Enjoy Friday everyone. Peace

If I wasn't on the left coast I would apply for a job. Your place air conditioned? I just retired and have a little time on my hands. Bought a place up north and it won't be ready for almost three months.

We kicked TN out of the south. They now belong to the mid-west. Instead of sweet tea and ya'll they've been demoted to using "Hi!" and "I'll take a Pop."
