Nice finds there. Are you selling the washers/dryers and hot water heaters as shred or are you breaking them down to get the other metals out of them? Theres alot of copper/brass your missing out on if you are not processing them.

Don't have time. Cut the cord and dump. (Put in truck take out of truck break down. Put back in truck take out of truck.) I don't think so...
By the time you do all that you can go to the yard. And pick up 6 more. Sorry but i like to keep the ball rolling.

Are we hear to make money? Or is this a hobby?

Tip them over on the back of the truck, remove goodies and take to yard, repeat process. And yes, it's a good paying hobby,,,

I think I will stick with my escrap then. I cant see making any money running $25 loads of shred, but to each there own.

I like your truck, like a giant tweetie bird.
the names on the washing machines were funny, well at least they went in style, with a belly full of copper.
I think if I was to do steel then i'd also have a caged trailer sitting at home.
use the truck to do the pick ups, queue up copper bearing steel and when scrapped out put into trailer.
that way your truck is always empty and ready to go pick up more things, nothing wrong with holding them for a while
until you get to pulling out the motors, then loading them onto the trailer.

steel's ok but a truck load of copper pulling a trailer load of shred is much sexier, you drive into the yard with the real deal then.
even if you didn't pull the copper and just sold them as motors you'd soon build enough up to take in a full load.
you already see the value in cutting the cord, but to get to the motor you'll get more wire too.
stainless steel possibly in the washers & dryers, brass bits, cast alloy, mate the're like a box of chocolates,
your just eating the wrappers selling them as scrap steel.

Look at how much copper and brass was sticking out of the top of that water heater. I bet your yard was very happy to buy that as shred.

Oh i got the copper and brass off of the water heater. I don't have room to keep things laying about. I'll lose my happy home if i did that.
If i get 1 or 2 i'll mess about some. But not when i'm picking up 3 or 4 at a time & the costomer is waiting.

    I can tell you it's a lot more then $25 a load. 1 washer is 250 lb's @ .10 a lb That hot water heater was over 200 lb's. Plus i got $35.00 to hall them out
    of the back yard.

As stated if you have the room and time break them down further. Nothing is worse than having a full truck of steel and you can't get the next load! I have had to unload fridge and washer on a Sunday as yard closed, pick up more stuff and then reload it for Monday to get paid and to get rid of the stuff! I try and not keep appliances like Fridges, washers, dryers around the yard, I have enough piles of motors, alum, buckets of other stuff, bags of ins wire as is! Dryer motors come off quick even in the back of your truck, but if you need the truck to get more stuff and you are getting paid to haul it away, seems that you are doing well... I want to get a trailer as well as it would be easier to store the steel up for one big load instead of lot's of smaller loads in the bed of a truck!

Nice load! It's out there for the finding.

Washers/Dryers....FWIW, I sell bulk of our washers/dryers to local Appliance shop..I get more than scrap value. I'm doing quite a bit of appliances with the 18 apt complexes now calling. Part time hobby has turned into FT job...solely supporting 2 households. Teen son branching out to counties we can't handle. Coming up on 1 yr in scrap business officially. w00t!

Good job on the load. You are doing well. I find that the situation determines wether or not to break down or just dump and go.

To Christine its great to hear stories of others success, keep it up. Mike.

Why pay for a trailer when you can build your own. I have several rolling chassis from pickups and 4wd suv's ive parted down that would make great trailers. Just remove the front axle and weld on some decking and sideboards and presto its a 14ft trailer.
