Some of our local towns around here have these also. They are a "day or weekend" selected that the town might supply the dumpsters (or not) but the residents are allowed to "spring clean" their yards and garages and throw out anything and everything without penalty. It looks like an endless stream of scrapper trucks driving around picking up the "goodies" and when it's all done the remainder goes in the big dumpster. It's a way to get rid of large amounts without costing a fortune in disposal costs. Or the county trash trucks come around to pick up leftovers, whichever the case.

Ours suburb splits it up into 3 sections with each section lasting a week...but they only have it every other year. The one that was held in 2011 is what got me into recycling and was able to make enough $$ to throw a nice graduation party, including catering, for our youngest.

2013 was a whole different story due to refining skills and learning from the forum. Pulled 8 tons off the street over 3 weeks, with many items that still had resale value. This year is an off year but going to still let it be known that I will pick their stuff up.

Thanks for the answers, guys. I've lived in various towns in the Mid-Atlantic states, and none of them ever had this. A couple of towns where I've lived would periodically haul away our leaves in the fall if we piled them neatly at the curb, but that's it. And they wouldn't even take the leaves if they saw too many sticks in there!

We do this on the sandbar also. Spring an fall cleanup. Our regular trash guys won't get anything not in the can, cause..you know..their so energetic in those big trucks that do all the work for them.../sarcasm

So the towns here do a spring an fall clean/pick up. Basically throw everything that doesn't fit in the can, or isn't allowed, on the curb, an what the scrappers don't take, the towns send special crews that actually..wait for it..work, who pick it all up an toss it in the trucks an carry it on out. it also helps with things like left over remenants from hurricanes, etc. They allow a lot of things, from wood/construction debris, TV's, Lawn stuff(bushes, grass, etc, etc) an a host of other items. Personally I love the big clean ups, it's the one time I'll take to hit curbco multiple times in a 2 week period an focus on just regular scrap vs my usual ewaste.


An yes..I'm picking on the trash guys in my area, when they stop being a bunch of lazy twits, I'll stop picking on them. ;)
