Local auction place has 523 desktops with the harddrives removed for 1300 bucks... Any money to be made there scrapping these things? Thanks in advance!

I can't find the posting right now, but someone broke it down and the average take from breaking down a computer was approx. $12. So they figured they could pay $2 each for them and still come out ok.

If they have pentium pro cpus they are worth more but you probably don't know what is in them. Without hard drives makes a difference. You could probably make a profit but not huge especially if you have to ship the e-scrap.

I only pay if the pc is complete. If it's missing the hard drive, chances are it's also missing the memory.
I believe it broke down to something like $12-15 per pc.

It depends what computers they are. I mean if they are modern and decent you could build yourself one out of all the parts, sell all the parts or if on the other hand older obviously scrap. I would say it is worth it as they are selling them for roughly just over $2 per one and you can make $10 from each one if there of decent grade

You can make a simple math exercise here: you buy them for $2.5/each and if you can resell only half of them, 260 x $10 = $2600 (plus some $$$ from the recycling of the rest). This can be the worst scenario but... your homework is to check first of all if the computers have still the motherboards, CPU's and memories. Go in internet to see the images of all these important parts to understand for what we are talking about. Selling them on E-bay or Craigslist the profit for sure will be higher.
If the computers have none of these important parts, than ask your scrapyard what pays for the whole computers if you don't have the time to tear down and separate wires, aluminum and ferrous parts. Check also in your area the guys that collect e-waste and recycle them.
I keep the tearing down as the last option in anything...

I know whats what in a computer and have scrapped probably 30 or so in the last month. These were just given to me , its the paying (and 1300 bucks at that) that kinda scares me. Only venues I woudl have to sell the escrap woudl be ebay and online buyers etc etc. Where are ya easy and computerscrapper!?!? Looks as if all other componets are intact.

Sorry I got busy with things going on here.
I would buy them in a heart beat...if you only have to pay the $1300 for all of them you will make a killing.
If you brake down all the computers you are looking at $11 to $16 for each computer. With out a hard drive that is fine. It only removes about $1.20 from the total worth of the desktop.
So if you paid the $1300 you can make from $5,753 to $8,368 cash.
The avg person can brake down 10computers an hour so a total of 52.3 hours at $10 an hour = $523 + your $1,300 so for under 2grand you will have a very nice profit!

aside from processor, memory and pci chips.. how much per lb do you get for the motherboard with all that removed? on avg.. since prices change.

I got a guy here in kansas city that will by motherbords,proccessors,memory sticks, harddrives,and disk drive off me. Then I scrap the rest. Only thing is that you got to get rid of the tubes unless there all lcd

someone mentioned ripping off capcitors and other doohickies in order to get good price for motherboards. is there any resource out there to show me what to remove and what remains?

The caps and other "doohickies" add weight to the boards and the buyers are buying by the pound so why would you want to shoot yourself in the foot by taking weight off the boards???
As far as I know you do not have to remove anything from a mother board to sell it. (except for the processor and memory.)
