Catalytic Converters worth more if broke down?

Is there a financial gain to be had by breaking down a catalytic converter or do most yards pay for the whole unit?

Most yards pay pennies on the dollar for catalytic converters and they would have no idea what your “guts/insides” are worth.

    Now if you want to:
    1. Save up 2000 or more lbs of catalyst material.
    2. Wait to be vetted.
    3. Ship across the country on your dime.
    4. Receive zero money for 30-45 days after they receive your material.
    5. Cannot tell you what your converters are worth before you ship.
    6. Have 3.7 out of 5 on Google reviews with the last review:
“This company is a joke They will steal from you thousands of dollars. I do not recommend this company at all if you own a scrapping business”
If this sounds good to you, operators are waiting NOW!

Here's a direct communication that I received from the buyer at Metallix.

First things first, I want to thank you for the conversation. I learned a lot and very much enjoyed our conversation. As I mentioned, if I start dealing with Danny and I go out to visit Tac Industries, I would like very much to meet you so I can put a face to the voice.

I also wanted to reach out to you and go over a few things we spoke about and some information about Metallix for you to relay to Danny.

Per our conversation, we have a facility dedicated completely to catalytic converters and has the capacity to process 4 million pounds of ceramic converters annually. It also is one of few locations in the world with a PGM (platinum group metals) recycling process for metal foil converters with the ability to process 3.5 million pounds per year.

    To work with us,

    · You must have an existing company. (The Patriot Act does not allow us to buy and pay out an individual)
    · You must send in minimum of 2,000 lbs for processing at a time.
    · We will pay up to 50% of transportation cost of getting the shipment to our faculty.
    · We will arrange all shipment. (If you want to arrange the shipment, we will pay up to 50%)
    ·
Once you’ve processed 3 full shipments with us, we can provide advances on the next lots. (We will send you a payment as soon as we receive the shipment at our location up to 75% allowing you to continue buying more convertors.

    ·
We process both ceramic and foil convertors. We do ask that you separate them prior to shipment since the processing method is very different.

    Please send me:
    · Your full name (just for my knowledge)
    · Your phone number.( just for my knowledge)
    · Danny’s full Name.
    · Danny’s phone number.
    · Tac Industries’ address.
    · Danny’s e mail address.

Please let me know if you have any further questions and comments.
Look forward to hearing back from you.

You pretty much said the history of Stillwater, not much left to say. You wrote the book or copy-pasted it.

Stillwater Mining Starts Catalytic Converter Recycling Plant in Montana

Billings, Mont.-based Stillwater Mining Co., which is involved in the development, extraction, processing, smelting, refining and marketing of palladium, platinum and associated metals, has announced the formal startup of operations at its new catalytic converter recycling and sample plant in Columbus, Mont.

The new facility includes enhanced dust collection and pneumatic conveyance into the company’s smelter, according to Stillwater. Adjacent to the facility, Stillwater is building an automated X-ray system that it says will allow for expedited assay of catalyst materials. Installation of the X-ray equipment should be completed in

September, with system calibration continuing into the fourth quarter, the company says.
In a release announcing the opening, Frank McAllister, Stillwater’s chairman and CEO, says,

We envision recycling as an important avenue of added growth going forward. Over the last two years, the company has made substantial investments in its recycling capabilities, thereby positioning itself as a world-class recycler and processor of precious-metal-bearing materials.

The startup of operations at the recycling processing and sampling plant, followed by completion of the assay plant next month, both constitute significant milestones for the company, and we are proud of our employees who have been instrumental in their conception, construction and now startup."
In conjunction with the opening of the facility, Stillwater announced changes to its management structure.

The company appointed John Stark as executive vice president and chief commercial officer. He will be responsible for all the company's commercial activities, including the recycling business and the company’s metallurgical complex in Columbus.

Reporting to Stark will be two new company vice presidents, Greg Roset and Dave Shuck.
Roset has been general manager of the company's smelter operations for nine years and has been with the company since 1988. He has been instrumental during the past several years in establishing and developing the company's recycling business.

Operation of the new recycling plant will be under his direction.
Shuck has been general manager of the company's base metal refinery operations and assay laboratory in Columbus since 2006.

The company also elected is Koss and Bruce Gilbert as vice presidident

Cats are only a sideline for me. Maybe accumulate a dozen or so here and there. But when I have them they get shipped to APA .
He is correct when he says that most of the yards don't know cats and will just give you a flat rate price. Each one is different and some worth much more than others. I just cut the pipes off ( if any ) and send the shell to APA. he takes care of the rest. If you are not sure what you have send him pics and he'll tell you and give you a quote on the spot too. Could not be any easier than that for me.
Again, I am just small time when it come to cats so YMMV.
Remember... wherever you go... there you are

Thank you sir. I appreciate your business and your kind words. I am here to buy and help people.

Bringing up Metallix as the Holy Grail of catalytic converters is not helping any of us here. When someone here has 1,2, 5, 12, 50 catalytic converters, Metallix cannot help you in any way and it side tracks people away from their questions.

When people here were having troubles with someone, they stated the facts to all of us.
    When I stated facts, I get told “Your (misspelled it’s you’re) full of ****t (it’s 4 letters not 5)”.

I was warned not say anything negative because I might get sued like CNN. Then someone says negative things about me.......

So I apologize to everyone that has to endure this banter. Again I am here to buy catalytic converters and be apart of the forum. I learn so much from all of you about computers, escrap, copper, etc. I hope I can repay it in a little way with my knowledge of converters.

Let’s everyone just pray/send positive vibes out for everyone. The corona virus is affecting many things not just PGMs. I am fine, let’s send blessings out to people in need or danger.

I hope China doesn't have a pluage, who will buy our scrap?! (I am actually pretty sure I heard Turkey is now the main importer of scrap metal.... But still)

In all seriousness, it sucks and I hope that there is some vaccines and/or cures and such that get worked out soon. Also, a lesson that eating bats (which eat mosquitos and are a host for TONS of diseases) is a bad idea....

Not worth it to disassemble yourself, its a complex process, and unless you're skilled at it you will lose more money than you can make. Find a reputable buyer, do your homework
