    Mixing copper and brass....

    I'm curious,

I just collect a little scrap from time to time. Power Cords, Fittings, nozzles ect.

Does anyone know how the weight is measured, and classified if I wanted to just bring a bucket in of dirty copper fittings
and Brass together ? (Brass Pull Knobs, Hinges ect.)

If I have say 3 lbs of materials, I'm not interested in separating everything.

I visit my local scrap yard almost every day, and I can tell you with confidence that their number one pet peeve is people who do not separate their metals. At the very best you are going to get paid for Brass on all of it. They may go even lower because they will have to sort it.

Yes you can turn in as is, but as stated you will get the lowest price for the lot. Got to keep them separated for the best price. #2 copper worth more than brass and brass worth more than zinc.

Thank you for the replies, I know that the copper is worth more, I'm just not worried about a lb or two difference. Its not goign to make or break my life.
I would be fine just taking yellow brass payout if that was offered.

    Regards.

What you should do is turn it in as is and send me a check for 2 dollars. Lol. In other words, you're just wasting money turning it in as is. Even if it's only 3 lbs of stuff (not really worth a yard trip to begin with) not sorting it out is just throwing money away. If you have massive volume you need to move fast, sometimes it makes more sense to lose a few pennies to make a few bucks. But if you're just starting out and have that small of an amount, build good habits now. Instead of one big bucket, collect in 2 or 3 smaller bins. Trust me when I say, the "I'll get to it later" buckets pile up a lot faster than you think and take 4 times as long to sort and separate than it would have taken to sort everything right from the get go. Take the little bit of stuff you have and a half hour in front of the tv, sort it out while enjoying a cold one, and build up an (at least semi) organized collection, and when you have a decent amount of material, take it in for pay day.

Each yard is different But most yards will see this as pure Newbie and purchase as dirty Brass or dirty copper some might try and pull copper Bearing
for 3 pounds - - umm , DUDE , I mean Dude this is a scrap business , it's about weight . You gotta work the weight

Now if you had a 55 gallon drum full I could see , Well i'm a little tired or don't have the time & based on the mass
the yard might pay ok by volume

if you do not have a burning need for the money right now, your best bet is to get a couple of extra buckets, separate it, then take each bucket in as it gets filled up. It will not take much time at all to separate it, and you will come out better in the long run.

If you are going to take that 3 pounds to the yard as-is, you'll likely be losing money just in the fuel costs to get it there.
Why not give it away? Find some young kid that has an interest, let them have it. They will probably appreciate it more.

Hi thanks for your responses. I should clarify that the 3 lb is an arbitrary value. I pick up a little scrap here and there while out. I only stop at a yard if its on my way to where im going. Regards.

Might be arbitrary but 3 LB is like whats in a Junk Draw
    3# brass is worth $3.60
    3# copper is worth $4.95
from that point it's down hill in price
Get some 5 gal palls list them
    #2 copper
    Clean Brass
    Wire
    Copper bearing
    Fill them as you find

your not a real scrapper because half the fun is taking the stuff apart..sure who can argue with clean copper pipes but sawing the brass fittings off to get a better price is like a prerequisite for this job
