How much gold is on a average 2000+ desktop

Thank you for the kind words, and I have to tell you, I love your posts as well.

I have been really busy, back in college for my third time, and putting in a lot of hours working. I am recovering and refining of course, but with some of the metals I am creating metal art, specifically Mokume Gane, and Damascus steel billets for knives, swords, etc.

I haven't seen a lot of posts that are relevant to my experience, so many of you have a lot more experience in scrapping specifically than I do. But I will be around a little more now that school is just about to break, and my workload is calming down a bit.

I really appreciate you guys for taking the time to answer my question with so much details! I am getting more and more confinced that you can make more money out of selling parts (on ebay!) instead of refining the parts for gold and other materials in your back garden.


If you see some of the prices people pay for lots of cpu's (not ceramic) its insane. I have seen people pay more then 2$ for a harddisk aswell.

I did read on the forum most people paying 3-5$ for a complete desktop am i right?

Already doing that with Gold and Silver coins and bullions, this is just for a hobby.

I sold a used hard drive last week for $50...u tell me if its worth testing these items

I have sold several cards and other items for $5-100....like mikeinreco said, $10-100 for a hard drive (depends on what you have, SATA or SSD). People buy parts from copiers, printers...any number of things (even the plastic covers and trays).

Basically, the resale market (if you know what you are doing and know how to test) can make you some decent money....again...all depends on what you get, consumer desktops or modern telephone systems ($$$$$) to even medical things like monitors (I sold an UNTESTED one as a parts monitor (I did not have the power supply and was not buying one to test it as it was proprietary), for about $100). Point is, learn what you are doing, know what you have, test the right stuff....make $$$$$. Sometimes even ALOT of $$$.

Since you're in another country (Another continent, actually), I can't say what to pay. I don't know what's in Europe in way of refiners, what the shipping hurdles are, or what the dollar is worth in your currency.

Those prices were before the price dipped. I'd say it's now $1.50 to $3.00 per tower. I'd definitely try selling parts, though- worst case scenario is that you end up sending them to a refinery like you'd have anyways....

Thanks for the tips, just bought 300kg (600+ lbs) on (new and refurbished) SCSI Harddisks 30 - 300GB (some with adapters).. Looked some up on ebay and found out there still selling for $$.. So im first going to try to sell the lot for double there, if that doenst work ill sell them individual and as last option tearing them apart and sell the parts.

I must say im amazed how much information you can find about scraping, refining etc, and once again thank you for all the help and tips.!

I recommend you do as much testing on the items you intend to sell and wiping any hard drives prior to listing them. Take you time and you will have a better experience with ebay. If you are new to ebay they will likely limit your sales in the first couple of months. 73 Mike
