I have a gaylord box with copper and brass bearing breakage, such as a copper pipe end with a steel pipe piece still attached, brass/steel pressure regulators, and other similar junk where copper is attached to steel. Overall it is about 50/50 by weight.
My question , is there a scrap category just for that and would I be able to get a price that is fair, with breakage done in the developing world at cheap labor prices?

that is Breakage or refinery copper the yard should look at it and price you at recovery so if it is really 50% Cu expect 1/2 of the Cu2 price as a top dollar price at the yard of your choice.

True, but many yards will try to buy it as dirty or refinery copper for like 18 cents per pound

Our yard calls it "copper bearing" at .10 lb.

my yard will mix that in with ACR ends and right now I think its only paying 20 cents a pound.
I miss when it was 70 cents...

I would take a sawzall, or whatever you have, and cut all the clean copper off. Turn that in as #1 or #2 copper. The copper that's left with steel attached, take what the yard will pay. If it is really 50/50 by weight you should be able to cut what? 25% clean copper off? What is left over would probably still be in the same (lower paying) category if you just left as is.

As a rule of thumb my breakage is always the light load. My yard also gives 10-25cents for breakage. either alum or copper. Gather the tools and get what is worth getting. Then cry as 10lbs brings a buck or 2 but smile as you scrap....

Copper Content here is paying $.03 lb.

If someone brings me a 3 inch copper pipe with a 1# steel nut on it, I'm gonna buy it as steel. Steel out weighs the copper piping and I have to run the shear to clean it. Other CU breakage I pay 10 cents a pound for *if* it contains a lot of wire and/or copper. If its mostly steel weight I'm gonna buy it as steel.Originally Posted by HT1

Brass on the other hand is easier to break down/clean. I don't usually deduct unless its meters which are half and half. At that point, we deduct half. I have to take them apart by hand and you sure aren't going to get full brass price for the product.
Plus, you say you have a gaylord full. No way in heck am I gonna set that gaylord on my scale and pay you breakage price not knowing if you have the bottom half fluffed with steel.
