    seperating wires help

i thought id post this in a seperate thread to get more answers on it.

my uncle rewired the house but im not sure how much of it her rewired and he had some of the white romex i think its called wire nutted onto that old wire is it safe to take it out and just wire nut the two romexes together or will it mess up something that gets power from it? i mean we have a breaker box and i see none of that wire going into it its all new stuff but sone of the wires have to old stuff attached to it. i forgot to add that i also incountered another wire like the one i described but this one had two wires in it with the same casing and it was plastic but the wire had some kind of green oil stuff when i stripped it and it looked to be maybe 12 or 14 gauge wire not sure it went like this outer black casing then paper wraped around the wire casing and then green oil stuff it smelled likee oil maybe to reduce the heat or act as a isulator not sure.

Call an electrician. No one on an Internet forum is going to know how your house is wired. And I wouldn't suggest hooking wires together if you aren't sure about what you are doing. You'll burn your house down.

Sounds like you came across romex and knob-and-tube. Either way, I'd call an electrician to be sure it's not hooked up to someplace you don't see. Those wires carry over 30 amps and if you go grabbing wires you can get electrocuted or die. It's not volts that kills, it's amperage.

It appears that you have little, if any, knowledge of electricity and electrical circuits. When you lack the knowledge, leave it to proffessionals. This applies to your question and also many items in the scrap industries.

For a question like this, you should find a forum full of electricians and or electrial engineers. As an FYI, 12 gauge copper wire is only rated for 20 amps.

Is your uncle an electrician. If so, you should be asking him this question. If not that house is no longer within code.

True, but even 20a can kill you. Anything over an amp can technically kill you(it's something like 15ma can stop the average human heart and most defibs are rated at a max of 50ma).

So did Hoss. I have his link handy, it's quite a read for the newer escrappers.

Mind sharing the link? I don't plan on scraping crt's myself but if I ever run across someone else doing it... would be good to know

I am not an electrician just a very skilled remodeler. Every time you mess with any wire go to the breaker box, fuse box and turn off all breakers or remove all fuses AND turn of main breaker. Get yourself a cheap tester. All you do is touch it to the wire if it has current going through it there will be a beep and you know to back off. I always test just after the box for NO BEEP. Then above box on thick black service entry cable for current. It is good to get a feel for where the current is and is not. Electricity is dangerous especially standing in the dark in a puddle of water grounded out in a damp basement. I love copper as much as the next guy. There is something about it that makes the cash register in my head go cha ching.

    Tool Storage, Carts, & Organization | Tool Kits & Sets | Ideal® Journeyman Insulated Kit, Volt-Sensor® NCV Tester | B898757 - GlobalIndustrial.com

IF YOU HAVE ANY DOUBT ABOUT THE STATUS OF THE CURRENT IN WIRE DO NOT MESS WITH IT.

I saw a 400 amp panel arc through the air and zap a guy in the steel mill once. Electricity has no conscious. It will attempt to flow to a ground with complete disregard to anything in its path.

You guys might as well start a "in memory" thread for Mike1. Based on the threads I have read in the last few days, his life expectancy is around 14.5 hours.
