is it against the law to take something from outside the goodwill in a store parking lot? its the thing in a dollar general parking lot not the goodwill store.

I believe so. I assume that you are referring to one of those giant containers meant for collecting donations for goodwill? That get too full sometimes and people have to leave their donations to goodwill setting in front of them?

Those items are meant as donations for goodwill. However, I believe that there may be a sign on the box stating for people to not do this. If that is the case it may be considered littering when they do it.

It seems to me that I've also seen signs advising that it's a crime to take stuff left there. But really, you know why its there. Why do you need to ask the question? Is there a difference between something being against the law and something being wrong?

It is posted that it is only illegal to take stuff from inside the box. The stuff outside could be considered free game but that isn't very tactful and I wouldn't do it.

I'd stay clear of it all together, legal or not. You'll only give yourself a bad name if it's seen and gets out. (as well as tarnishing more the scrapper image) In this business, the power of your good name can take you farther than the few dollars scavanged there.

Is that supposed to be a recommendation for, or against doing the same?

I have never had a problem asking the store managers if they would like me to get rid of that kind of stuff. Sometimes, they don't know where it came from and will say "If it's still there in a week, take it." It shows professionalism.

It was a general statement of my observations. I meant to edit it to say I wouldn't do it, but my 2 year old son decided to eat baby orajel, so I had to tend to him first.

    Thanks for reminding me.
