Got a pile of wet shot gun shells. May be dry by now. Anyway does anyone know how to properly scrap or dispose of shells aka ammunition.

Best advise I can give you is to check with your yard, some will not take shells, others buy them but at a lower price than regular brass.

I think you can still shoot them... they are in plastic cases. No way would a yard take them as is. Spent shotgun shells with the plastic on them is one thing!

cut them open with a pocket knife at the top
dump out the contents
put the "empty" casing in a vise
strike the primer
dirty brass or steel pile.
could sell the shot if you know sizes and re-loaders
cartridge ammo
pull the bullet out (two sets of pliers)
dump out contents
put "empty" in vise
strike primer
dirty brass or steel
or just dispose of them at local pd.

You can open them up and get the lead out, then sell that as scrap or to reloaders. Put the powder in an empty jar or something for when you need a bit of fun. Then if the bottom is brass great! But some have magnetic ends and would be shred. Striking the primer in a vice is always good. Oh and some might have steel shot so that only really has value to reloaders or just as steel

Blacksteel, if you aren't familiar with setting off primers you probably should find a friend who is up on the details. Some safety glasses or googles should be worn, too!!

to echo a bit, some yards dont take brass shells and those that do buy them at a lower price because of their contamination and guys getting injured when they go to refine them. shotgun shells are a bust, with that plastic on they have very little value and theres no way its worth it to cut out the plastic

Sell them as "wet shotgun shells" to someone that is willing to take the chance that at least some of them work. Unless they were completely underwater for any length of time I would guess they would be fine.

whenever handling firearms and ammunition there is an obvious degree of risk involved. Not gonna tell anybody not to do it, but if you are nervous or unsure it would be wise to get some help.
