Anybody go to the dump?

Just sittin here in the garage tearin some things apart tonight, when i thought something. Where you guys are, can you go to the dump and pick something up? I was thinkin about goin there, and seeing if they have any wire, or anything else that could be scrapped.



Any info would be great.

Also they have a scrap pile. I leave that alone as they obviously are going to recycle it. The stuff I get is stuff that would be dozed over minutes after I leave.

Just think about how much copper, alum, steel, etc is in the landfills all across the US and around the world. Sickening.

Hmm. I been to the Pickle Butte dump once. Talk about in the freakin HICK STICKS. I thought about scavenging a bit when i was there, but i was the only one there, and all the employees looked just bored enough to get me haha.

Yeah, i go to the hidden springs dump. Pickle Butte is WAYYYYYYYYY out there. Plus you have to be a Canyon County resident to go there i think.

I just bought a yearly dump pass to my local dump. They have a huge box for recyclable electronics and also a huge 3 story pile of random junk. Large signs saying "no scavenging" though.

My dump has dumpsters they put metal in. They don't allow people to scavenge or even get out of their vehicles to do more than unload

Same here, can't even get out of the vehicle and walk around =( and always someone watching.

I've had this very thought, possibly even in the same garage setting. After I investigated, I found out that it would be impossible, as the landfill restricts removal, has gate guards etc so there would be no way out getting out with any weight.

I also know that the city scraps from the landfill.

I had great dreams of parking my trailer there, loading up and taking to the scrap yard..All day, every day...but no.

I have 2 landfills within a half hour of me. No picking allowed at either one. One of them does separate scrap to sell for profit. I don't know what the other one does with their metal.

On several occasions, as I am leaving the dump, I see someone coming in with a dryer, washer, what have you. If they came out of Nampa, they likely had to pass at least one scrap yard, if not 2-3 yards.

Drop it off in town, make a few bucks, or drive allll the way out to Pickle Butte, spend gas money AND pay for the "privilege" to dump metal. Granted they have actual trash as well, but you get what I am saying.

They might just not be aware like I wasn't until I started scrapping. I had never ever given a thought to the stuff I threw out or saw others throw out. I never knew there were places to take scrap for cash until we cleaned up my grammas house and my dad told me. Just lived my life and never gave it a thought so its possible they just dont' know. Or, they think there is a negative connotation attached to scrapping. When I think of how much stuff I threw out over the years............*sigh*

I also thought about dumps but figure they are probably fenced and probably a law about not taking stuff out.

I think a lot of people just don't realize how things work--when I first started going to the scrapyard I use now it was to drop off bales of rusty wire I never asked for money (didn't weigh much anyway but I thought I was being smart by going to a nearby place that would recycle the metal and not charge me anything for getting rid of it [it would have been a nightmare to put in the trash]).

There are 3 little towns around where I live out in the sticks and they let me take whatever I want, best haul was 90lbs of copper one day, house demo. I have also talked to the mayors and I have dibs on the condemned houses, just have to wait till they are slated for demo then I go in a week or 2 before and gut the plumbing, there is usually 50-150 lbs in a house.

Ya it rocks, and I know EVERYONE around here for a 50 mile radius and there are so many old abandoned farm houses and old vehicles taking up space everywhere, just the other day I went to a farm yard, and the old guy gave me a tractor radiator, weighed 85lbs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I got $1.70 a pound for that baby!

1.70 sounds like a clean price to me. I just got 1.40 by me the other day for clean. What would it bring with the steel still attached? I have never taken them in without being "clean".
