    Lead Acid Battery lead

Hey everyone, just have a lead for some of you.

I worked for Radioshack for 3 years up until July and had a great time working there. One of our duties was to help dispose of batteries for customers. We only recycled certain battery types and even then most of the Radioshacks I have worked at toss away several types of batteries. Since I left on good terms with the current managers, I went over there and asked them about the batteries. I immediately got 2 security system lead acid batteries and I gave them my card for future pick ups.

As I see it, the following batteries should be able to be recovered through them due to them not wanting to be fined when shipping batteries to recycle them,

Lead Acid (Security system, Scooter, and occasionally an automotive)
    Li-Ion (Cell phones, laptops)
Alkaline AAs (although I doubt these are sellable)
    Lithium (AAs)

I got my two local Shacks and seeing as its not too much of a load to travel around to other locations, thought Id pass this by to you guys.

Darn you must live in a city! My country area radioshacks would go through maybe 100LBs worth every 2-3 months per store. Unless they stock piled them rather than toss them out.

Along those lines, those security system lead acid batteries are plentiful amongst the service technicians that work in the industry. When I worked for an alarm company, the service technicians spent most of their days changing out batteries on 90% of their service calls. We were supposed to bring them into the office to be recycled but many times we would sneak them into the dumpster. So If you see the ADT guy on the street (or some other alarm company) ask them for their old/used batteries and offer them $1 each for the 7.0Ah which can get you $3-$4 at the scrap yard. The 4.0Ah batteries only get you a dollar or two.

I've been offering the guys $1 per battery regardless of the size because even though I will break even (or maybe lose a few cents) on the smaller batteries, I am banking on the fact that if I give them an incentive to bring me a steady supply, it will all come out in the wash and I'll still make a profit.

Security alarm boards have lots of gold in them. On the main board as well as the keyboard.

I picked thru 10 of them & only got 2 without gold, real old ones of NZ origin.

The modern brandnames with plastic keypads were the best boards. The gold also varied a lot between batches of the same boards too.

Also security systems are a great source of plastic coated copper telephone wire.
