    Same with earmuffs.
    Loud noises are distracting and earmuffs or plugs only remove the sounds that will deafen you, not human voices (much) infact you can sometimes hear stuff you couldn't hear before.

    Its removes the 'Ting' of metal hitting metal, that's the sound that deafens you. One loud hit of a hammer against a cold chisel and my ears ring all day.



    Remember, you can shut your eyes, but you cannot shut your ears.....
