We already figured out in a previous discussion that is not a good idea, the steel band is not worth the risk.

You should be releasing the vacuum in the tv before even beginning to take anything off of it, not to mention discharging the capacitor. Please use the search bar.

I have been tellin you's for ages that a CRT screen can & will explode & no one believed me....

Thats how my first explosion happened, levering the band off with a screwdriver. BOOM!

Then a few weeks ago theres a pic here of a guys leg after it got hit by exploding TV tube. Doing the same, removing the band without releasing the pressure inside the tube...

And now... Never trust the band, it can be loose & if you pick up the tube by the band, the screen can drop out of the band & run the really sharp broken glass right down your side, yah will get sliced open from stomach to ankle.

Don't say I never told you.

Someone mentioned that you can remove the suction cup on the side of the tube and insert a straight screwdriver and give it a sharp rap and it should go on thru and release the pressure/vacuum.
This link will explain how to go about grounding or shorting out the caps. on the boards. And we won't charge you for the laughs,,,

Back when I worked for Zenith (many moons ago), we were instructed to smack the neck of the CRTs with a hammer, cracking it and making it safe for transport back to the factory, where they were rebuilt.

Yeah but he has 9 years experience so I don't even know how something like this could have happened.

For some reason I forgot to smash the tube before cutting the band.

You don't need to 'smash' it, just merely crack the neck. And don't forget the safety glasses. It's also a real good idea, as already mentioned, to discharge the CRT first.

I actually don't usually bother with the cracking open the tube, and I leave the metal band so I can close the TV back up when I'm done and the tube will be secured in there. For those that want a quick/easy way to crack the top part of the CRT, just sharply twist that little board that's plugged onto the top of the CRT and it will easily crack the glass and release the vacuum. Very little glass is scattered and it seems to be about the safest way to do that and not risk poking your hands into broken glass.

I've also seen people say that they poke an awl or small screwdriver into the hole where that wire goes into the tube. I was always worried about it not breaking "cleanly" and maybe shattering the whole thing. I don't know, my way always seems to work clean and fast so I never really experimented beyond that.

Crts are a vacuum tube. That sound you hear is air being sucked in not gas coming out. I get the steel band because I can sell the abs plastic and there is not a recycler close to me.

This is the best, easiest, and safest way to release the vacuum. No broken glass to cut yourself.

It covers a area about 6 foot in radius in front & the rear of the screen with 6 inch shards of glass.

Thats a explosion, that was caused by a vacum.

No. It is an implosion that sucks everything inward and the resulting event sends debris in all directions. It doesn't just stop when it hits the center it still keeps moving away from the implosion point.

What not to do with angle grinder

I use a #2 phillips with a 2 foot blade and a hammer after removing all the goodies to remove vacuum pressure when required.

I put it against the part of the neck that does not have the prongs sticking up and just tap it. this releases vacuum pressure. you will hear a slight hiss and it gets louder when you pull back screw driver.

this method alows you to remove the electron gun for the colored glass a forum member buys with little other breakage. just keep in mind this method can leave sharp points on the neck. handle it with care.
