Long story, but I had a Goodwill manager mad at me today over some CRTs I'd hauled there just before Christmas. They'd had to call a hazmat team and been fined $300. Now she not going to take any more CRTs. So I started looking up the laws and found this: Fact Sheet: Easier Recycling of Cathode Ray Tubes | Wastes | US EPA
People may laugh at me, but that's ok. I laugh all the way to the bank.

This has been floating around for a while but it is pretty interesting. I really hope this paves the way for SOMEONE to start recycling the tubes profitably.

This has been in effect for awhile. Just understand that they are not hazardous waste ONLY IF THEY ARE RECYCLED. If they are being disposed of, they then become hazardous waste. This "deregulation" (for lack of a better term) was done to promote recycling and give handlers a little breathing room to do their job.

If it's okay for someone to put out a CTR monitor for the trash man why pay 300.00. Just throw them in the dumpster.
Our local dump has a area in their yard that is lined with over 12in of rubber and that is where they put all CRT. I don't understand why all dumps don't do this.

Different state laws. Maine is more stringent than some - even the EPA. I just found another state site where Maine is exempted from the US EPA ruling regarding CRTs. They're still hazardous material here and cannot be disposed that way.

I'm pretty sure a state cannot exempt itself from federal law....
I hope my local Goodwill doesn't stop taking CRTs. I dropped off 28 monitors (without the goodies inside) last Saturday. I even made sure they still accepted them and they said yes. They told me that they still had an agreement with Dell and that they were sending them to be recycled.
All dumps do, do this. It mandatory by the EPA that all new dump sites are
1. Dug to bedrock, normally deeper to facilitate more trash.
2. In a geologically safe area.
3. Have a 12 inch or larger impenetrable plastic or rubber insulator between the trash and bedrock to avoid contamination of ground water.
And a host of other safety things. One of my IT clients is a drilling company and is blasting a new landfill near us and i got an ear full

It's not really. What the EPA has done is essentially "de-regulated" the handling of crt 's by downgrading there waste status from hazardous to universal(only if being recycled). States are allowed to have more stringent laws than the EPA with Maine being an example here.

Well the EPA had to do something, lots and lots of older monitors and TV's getting replaced for newer flat screen type. California has a buy back program for the CRT's where do they go and what happens to them?

I think a lot of companies are just stockpiling them. That, and they are being sent to your state for processing the glass

Not sure. The gun was broken on one but I've taken in others like that without an issue.
Issue has been resolved. Yesterday, I was in a panic wondering what I'd do about the 100 or so CRTs I've got to go. Today, I contacted a commercial eWaste company. I can haul them in and just drop off any quantity.

Luckily I can still do the same at goodwill, but every time I show up the is this fat guy that gets all upset about me bringing in gutted TV's is cause he's fat or jealous? lol
Jealous that I make money off of them and can still pick them up into my truck and have the know how to do so? lol

"unbroken CRTs are not regulated as hazardous waste unless they are stored for more than a year" Found this nice gem in your article. I see problems/ loopholes involving that statement. For an example: moving the ctrs from one location to another to avoid the 1 year time period. Or trying to prove that the crt's haven't been there a year if someone complains about them. What if a storage unit is auctioned off and theres crts in it that have been there more than 1 year, it it classified as hazardous waste?
