It's probably different everywhere you go, but mom and pop shops around here always had inferior quality tools at high prices. It always made sence to go to a big box store for more variety and a better price.

When I put my tool set together I chose all Craftsman stuff to start with. 15 years later and I've only had to use the replacement warranty on a few socket wrenches.
