    What does this go to?

This was item was in the pile of wire I picked up in Saturday. I am trying to figure out
    1. what it actually goes to
    2. is it something I should just remove the wire from and sell as bare #1 and the drum al.

Thanks to a lot of your replies, I posted the 17 rolls of thhn for auction on a well known site and the bids are going better than expected. Just another reason I am glad I joined this site.

I'm thinking its a spool for an industrial welder, although I've never seen one that has such a shallow "groove" for the welding wire to sit in.

Can you ask the person you got it from? My guess is as good as IronPirate, but like he said the groove is too shallow.

Is the copper attached to it? The flat spot makes me wonder if it's supposed to stand upright.

Still thinking on this one - maybe an electromagnet? Note the 125 Ohm note on the side in the pic...Does RW mean "resistance wire?"

What I read on the side is a date and OK like someone ok'ed the quality control. Looks like 7-31-83 and duct tape around the face of the wrap. I'm guessing welding wire.

Is it a reel of wire for a really really old magnetic wire sound recorder?
They used to use a reel of wire instead of tape like they now use on reel to reel sound recorders (Tape decks).

Dunno about the date bit though.

Been there, done that. No luck. Looks like a date inspected, inspectors initials "RW" and 125 ohms.
